Richard ‘Dick’ Hanson Oct. 13, 1943 — Aug. 29, 2011 Former Sonora resident Richard “Dick” Hanson died Monday at a business in Carson City, Nev. He was 67. Born in Duluth, Minn., to Marion and Richard Hanson, he served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He married his wife Cecille Hicks in 1979 and the couple owned and operated Cal Sierra Disposal and raised a family in Sonora for 21 years. He retired in 1997 and he and his wife moved to the Carson Valley, where he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, riding quads, jeeping in the hills, having coffee with his friends and working in his shop in Minden, Nev. Mr. Hanson is survived by his wife of 32 years, Cecille Hanson, of Gardnerville, Nev.; children and their spouses, Deidre and Hans Bayer, of Sonora, Kristen and Larry Trauner, and Angele Hanson, all of Gardnerville; and grandchildren, Josie Walters-Egger and Gretchen Bayer, both of Sonora, and Cole and Karly Taunton, and Lila Hanson, all of Gardnerville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Don Hanson. A service is scheduled from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at his home. Geno Joseph Covello Jr. March 3, 1950 — Aug. 26, 2011 Valley Springs resident Geno Joseph Covello Jr. died Friday at Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital in San Andreas. He was 61. Born in Stockton, to Geno and Rita Covello, he lived in Valley Springs for about 40 years and owned Amador Steam Laundry in Sutter Creek for about 10 years. He enjoyed spending time with his family, and hunting and fishing, having taken many hunting and fishing trips to Bear Mountain with his family and friends. Mr. Covello is survived by children, Joel and Jesse Covello, both of Valley Springs: mother, Rita Covello, of Stockton; siblings, Marianne and husband Ron Hopper, Rick Covello and Gary and wife Janet Covello, all of Stockton; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Geno Covello Sr. A memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Sept. 9 at St. Michaels Church, 5882 N. Ashlee Lane, Stockton, to be followed by a reception. San Andreas Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements. Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Fatima Smith Dec. 27, 1967 — July 5, 2011 Sonora resident Elizabeth “Liz” Fatima Smith died July 5 at her home. She was 44. Born in Portugal’s Azores Islands, she moved to the U.S. when she was 4. She lived in the Bay Area for many years before moving to Sonora in 1995. She began working at a bank in the Bay Area when she was 19 and was a dancer in her 20s. While living in Sonora, she worked at the Sonora Family Bowl for many years. She enjoyed collecting movies, shopping for clothes, spending time with her family and taking care of her two cats. She is survived by her mother, two children, four grandsons, two brothers, two ex-husbands; and an aunt and uncle. She was preceded in death by her father. A celebration of life has already been held. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements. Oletha Klutts Oct. 18, 1925 — Aug. 28, 2011 Tuolumne resident Oletha Klutts died Sunday at Sonora Regional Medical Center. She was 85. Born in Obion, Tenn., to Ardie and Angie Walker, she was a homemaker for 60 years. She lived in Tuolumne for 10 years. She enjoyed gardening and fishing. She is survived by her son, James Oakes, of Hawaii; brother, Dr. Thomas Walker, of Louisville, Miss.; granddaughters, Anna Vickroy, of Livermore, and Christina Cooley, of Concord; and four great-grandchildren. A visitation is scheduled from 9 to 10 a.m. to be followed by a funeral service at 10 a.m. Saturday at Heuton Memorial Chapel. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
