Douglas Dow Miller Jr.

June 2, 1939 — Oct. 9, 2003

Douglas Dow Miller Jr. of Twain Harte died Oct. 9 at his home. He was 64.

He was born in Palo Alto and joined the Marine Corps after graduation from high school. He served at Camp Pendleton in Southern California and returned to Northern California after completing his service.

He graduated from San Francisco State University in 1964 and became a life insurance salesman. He later was promoted to sales management.

In 1968, he was hired by a small orthodontic manufacturer, Unitek Corp., to help develop the company's orthodontic sales in a five-state area.

He moved to Laguna Niguel in 1968 and, in 1970, became Western regional manager for Unitek, then director of its dental group in 1978.

He was hired by Johnson and Johnson in 1982 to head up the sales of a recently purchased small orthodontic manufacturer named "A" Company. In January 1992 he was hired by Lancer Orthodontics as president and chief operating officer and charged with reversing the downward trends of the major orthodontic manufacturer. Within the year, he dealt with major issues plaguing the company and brought it into profitability. He retired from Lancer in 2002.

His passions for the outdoors led him to retire and move to Twain Harte, his family said. He was a member of the Elks Lodge for more than 30 years.

While living in Laguna Niguel, his family said he spent countless hours at the beach and sailing his boat, "The Impulse." His hobbies included reading, traveling and collecting World War II paraphernalia. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, sharing his appreciation of the outdoors and loved his country, his family added.

Mr. Miller is survived by his mother, Kay Ann Miller; his daughter and son-in-law, Laurie Miller Schneider and Todd Schneider; granddaughter, Madeline Schneider; and his companion, Patricia Tippett.
