Ira Allen ‘Al’ Cross

Nov. 24, 1917 — Oct. 11, 2012

Sonora resident Ira Allen “Al” Cross died Oct. 11 at Avalon Care Center of Sonora. He was 94. 

Mr. Cross was born and raised in Yuma, Ariz.

He served in the U.S. Navy on the patrol craft escort USS PCE-902 from 1944 to 1946.

He married Carol Flentge on May 2, 1940.  

He served as a missionary in the former Belgian Congo, now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as the Republic of Benin, and the Ivory Coast for a number of years before retiring to Sonora in 1980.

Mr. Cross enjoyed restoring vehicles including a 1920 Model T Ford. He also enjoyed reading books and playing the piano.

Mr. Cross was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Carol Cross, earlier this year; his grandson, Christopher Brinkley, in 2005, and his daughter, Cherie Dotinga, in 2004.

He is survived by his daughters, Margie Wall, of Waldport, Ore., and Jeannie Bowen, of Sonora; and grandchildren, Donoven Bowen, of Sonora, Caleb Brinkley, of Manteca, and Rosie Brinkley, of Las Vegas, Nev.

Donations in his memory may be made to Our Daily Bread, RBC Ministries, P.O. Box 2222, Grand Rapids, MI 49501.

No services are planned.

Patricia ‘Pat’ (Cole) Miller

Aug. 31, 1943 — Oct. 16, 2012

Jamestown resident Patricia “Pat” (Cole) Miller died Oct. 16 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. She was 69.

Mrs. Miller was born in Oklahoma. She lived in Texas for several years before settling in Jamestown 10 years ago. 

She worked in retail as a cashier for the past seven years.

She enjoyed camping and traveling.

Mrs. Miller was preceded in death by brother, Alfred Cole; and her sister, Mabel Little.

She is survived by her domestic partner, John Frost, of Jamestown; her son, David Jones, of Jamestown; her brother, Edgar Cole, of Gunter, Texas; her sisters, Mary McBride, of Longview, Texas, and Roseila Doke, of McKinney, Texas; grandsons and their wives, John and Mary Anne McBride, of Longview, and Wilson and Rachel Cole, of Tennessee.

No services are planned.

Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.


MURRAY — James Murray, 84, of Sonora, died Monday at his home. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements. 

PARRIOTT — Melvin “Bernie” Parriott, 83, of Jamestown, died Sunday at Avalon Care Center of Sonora. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements. 

SCHOENBERGER — Don Schoenberger, 80, of Twain Harte, died Sunday at Sonora Regional Medical Center. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements. 

SOUZA — Wallace “Wally” Souza, 81, of Columbia, died Thursday at Sonora Regional Medical Center long-term care unit. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
