Rose Brown

Nov. 12, 1921 — Oct. 17, 2003

Rose Brown of Sonora died Friday at a Sonora hospital. She was 81.

She was born in Hawaii and lived in Sonora for seven years. She was a homemaker for 34 years and attended Sonora Foursquare Church.

Her family said she loved the San Francisco Giants baseball team.

She is survived by her husband, Wayne Brown, of Sonora.

A memorial service was held yesterday.

Heuton Memorial Chapel handled arrangements.

Margot ‘Peggy' Johnson

April 28, 1923 — Oct. 18, 2003

Margot "Peggy" Johnson, mother of William and Sherry Johnson, both of Sonora, died Saturday at a Modesto hospital. She was 80.

She was born in Minnesota and came to California at a young age. She grew up in railroad stations throughout Central California, where she developed a love for trains and traveling, which she did extensively in her later years, her family added.

Her family said she loved camping, bowling, baseball and owned season tickets for the Modesto A's baseball team. Her major love was her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, her family added.

She worked in the semi-conductor industry for 30 years while living in Hayward. She was active in Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and several parent-teacher associations. She moved to Modesto in the early 1990s after her husband died.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Harry Johnson of Modesto, Cliff and Loretta Johnson of Pleasanton, William Johnson of Sonora, and David A. Johnson of Fremont; daughters and son-in-law, Penny and Dave Almeda of Modesto and Sherry Johnson of Sonora; 13 grandchildren; numerous great- and great-great grandchildren; and her best friend and travel companion, George Read of Modesto.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Fred Johnson.

A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow at Chapel of the Chimes Mortuary in Hayward.

Sylvia Katherine Childs

June 16, 1914 — Oct. 18, 2003

Longtime Tuolumne County resident Sylvia Katherine Childs died Saturday at a Soulsbyville care home. She was 89.

She was born in Oakdale and was raised in Jamestown.

She worked for more than 20 years at the Alameda Naval Air Station, where she was supervisor of records. She moved back to Jamestown after her retirement.

She is survived by her brothers and sisters-in-law, Albert and Eleanor Uvelli of Jamestown and Joe and Paulie Uvelli of Columbia; a niece, Jayne Matthews of Alameda; and two nephews, David Uvelli of Seattle, Wash., and Scott Buckley of Tumwater, Wash.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Childs, a brother, Adolph Uvelli, and a sister, Evelyn Buckley.

No services are scheduled.

Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.


CONWAY — Former Sonora resident Jack Kent Conway, 86, died Sunday at a Burlingame hospital. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

MARTIN — Johnny Martin, 48, of Sonora died yesterday at a Sonora hospital. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
