George Alves

May 14, 1918 — Oct. 5, 2012

Sonora resident George Alves died Friday at Oak Terrace Memory Care in Soulsbyville. He was 94. 

Mr. Alves was born in Manteca. During World War II he served on destroyers in the Mediterranean, Atlantic and Pacific oceans. 

He worked as a Teamster before and after World War II in Stockton until 1960. He then settled in the Linden and the Oakdale areas, where he lived and worked as a dairyman, cattle rancher and farmer for more than 40 years. 

He moved to Sonora six years ago to be closer to family. 

Mr. Alves was a member of the American Legion Smyth-Bolter Post No. 58 of Sonora. He enjoyed cooking, baking and gardening, particularly roses and vegetables. 

Mr. Alves was preceded in death by his wife Lorraine Alves, in 2006; and six siblings.

He is survived by his sons, Bruce Alves, of Twain Harte, Keith Alves, of Fresno, and Mark Alves; his sister, Beatrice Kantack, of Manteca; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. 

Viewing will be held from 10 a.m. Friday at Cherokee Memorial Park Chapel on Highway 99 at Harney Lane in Lodi. Graveside services will follow at 11:30 a.m. 

Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements. 

Gary Dean Faria

Feb. 15, 1959 — Oct. 8, 2012

Sonora resident Gary Dean Faria died Monday at the Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson of brain cancer. He was 53.

Mr. Faria was born in San Jose to Nellie and Lester Faria. He was the youngest of four boys.

He grew up in Turlock, where his first business venture as a young boy was making and selling peace signs. 

He continued as an entrepreneur and owned a traveling motorcycle accessory business for the 12 years with his wife, Karen. The business allowed them to travel often and they enjoyed winters in Quartzite, Ariz.

The couple settled in Sonora 20 years ago.

Mr. Faria also enjoyed elk hunting in Idaho, deep sea fishing off the coast of Mexico, riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle, playing bingo, gardening, cooking, canning olives and creating new recipes.  

He was a member of Matuca Chapter 58 of E Clampus Vitus.

Mr. Faria was preceded in death by his father, Lester Faria, in 2003; and his brothers, David Faria, in 1995, and Kenny Faria, in 1990. 

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Karen Faria, of Sonora; his mother, Nellie Faria, of Waldron, Ark.; his brother, Steven Faria, of Waldron, Ark.; and several generations of nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday with a memorial following at 11 a.m. Saturday. Both will be held at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home, which is also handling arrangements. 

A celebration of the life and potluck will be at the Red Barn on Highway 49 in Tuttletown after the memorial service. 

Phoebe Elizabeth ‘Bobbi’ Martin

February 9, 1938 — Oct. 7, 2012

Sonora resident Phoebe Elizabeth “Bobbi” Martin died Oct. 7 at her home of cancer. She was 74.

Mrs. Martin was born in Fountain, Colo. She settled in Sonora 27 years ago.

She worked as an admittance clerk at Tuolumne General Hospital for 18 years until its closure. She enjoyed gardening and interior decorating.

Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Veronica Martin, in 2000, and her father, Augustine Martin, in the 1950s.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Penny Emig Gamble, of Twain Harte, Dawn and Brad Oranhood, of Sacramento, and Hope and Matthew Bouchard, of Sonora; grandchildren, Jackson and Colby Bouchard, of Sonora; and six siblings, Estelle Moses, of Georgia, Gloria Libor, of Colorado, Pat Quatlebaum, of Georgia, Betty Archuleta, of Colorado, Marlene Sanchez, of Colorado, and Becky Taylor, of Elk Grove.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, www.cancer.org or Hospice of the Sierra

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Divine Ministries Community Church, 19401 Susan Way, Sonora.

Robert F. Mitchell

Nov. 11, 1922 — Oct. 2, 2012

Sonora resident Robert F. Mitchell died Monday at Sonora Regional Medical Center. He was 89.

Mr. Mitchell was born in Ogden, Utah.

He worked as a procurement officer for the California Department of Corrections for more than 30 years before retiring in the mid-1970s.

Mr. Mitchell and his family moved throughout the state because of his work but the family settled in Sonora in 1965 with the opening of the Sierra Conservation Center.

He was a member of the California State Employees Association, Concord Masonic Lodge 117 and was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons since 1956. 

He enjoyed the outdoors and traveling.

Mr. Mitchell was preceded in death by his wife of more than 50 years, Patricia Ann Mitchell, in 1996. 

He is survived by his children, Robert E. Mitchell, of Bend, Ore., James M. Mitchell, of Lewiston, Idaho; and Pattie J. Francis, of Sonora; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. 

A family graveside will be held at Eastlawn Memorial Park in Sacramento, where arrangements are being handled.
