Judith Jean Freitas

Sonora resident Judith Jean Freitas died Aug. 24 at Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose. She was 70.
Mrs. Freitas was born in St. Paul, Minn. Her family moved to Oakland when she was a young girl.
In the early 1950s, she and her mother moved from Oakland to Tuolumne, where they lived in logging camps at Westside Lumber Mill.
She graduated from high school in Tuolumne in 1959.
Mrs. Freitas moved to the Bay Area to work for Pacific Bell before returning to Sonora in 1964 to marry Louis A. Freitas.
She later worked a clerk in the Welfare Department and as an admitting clerk at Tuolumne General Hospital.
Mrs. Freitas was preceded in death by her mother, in 1984.
She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Louis A. Freitas, of Sonora; her children, Teresa Muller, Steven Freitas and Anthony Freitas; and two grandchildren, Indika and Indar Freitas.

Antonio ‘Tony’ Madrid Martin
Oct. 26, 1922 — Oct. 6, 2012
Sonora resident Antonio “Tony” Madrid Martin died Oct. 6 at the home he shared with his daughter and her family. He was 89.
Mr. Martin was born in San Francisco to Frank and Amalia Martin.
He grew up in Winters, Yolo County, and lived there for many years before settling in Sonora a few months ago.
He served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
He worked as a farmer, rancher and served on the city council and as mayor in Winters. He also lived in Fairfield and Vacaville and worked for Valley View Packing Co. in the Suisun Valley as a fruit buyer and plant manager.
He enjoyed the works of Jane Austen and enjoyed storytelling.
Mr. Martin was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Angie Martin; his daughter, Esther Stone; parents, Frank and Amalia Martin; his brother, Joe Martin; and his sister, Madeline Jimenez.
He is survived by his daughter, Angelina Vasquez and her husband, Juan, of Sonora; his son-in-law, Andy Stone, of Sacramento; his grandchildren, A.J. Stone, of Sacramento, Sara Stone, of Sacramento, Ashley Long, of San Luis Obispo, and Rachel Long, of Sonora; his brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Ramona Martin, of Winters; and sister-in-law, Anna Martin, of Woodland; and two great-grandchildren.

A Catholic Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, 301 Main St., Winters, with a burial following at the Winters Cemetery.
A reception will follow at St. Anthony’s Catholic Center, 511 Main St., Winters.

YOUNG — Eftelita Young, 74, of Columbia, died Monday at her home in Columbia. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
