Grace Carlsen

July 11, 1905 — Oct. 31, 2003

Longtime Sonora resident Grace Carlsen died Friday at an Oakdale care home. She was 98.

She was born in Caney, Kan. At a very young age, she moved with her family to New Mexico in a covered wagon. Later, the family moved again with all nine children to California, where she lived for the rest of her life. By the age of 12, she was a church organist.

She began working as a receptionist at age 18 in San Francisco. She married Swen Carlsen in 1924, a Danish immigrant born in Copenhagen, Denmark. She worked as a bookkeeper for his company.

In 1958, they moved to Ranchos Poquitos in Sonora to be near their daughter, Beverly Sanguinetti. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1974 with more than 150 guests at the Twain Harte Lodge. They both attended Twain Harte's Evangelical Free Church until Mr. Carlsen died.

She loved to knit, crochet and play the organ, and she made three needlepoint chairs.

She received an organ on her 25th wedding anniversary and, her family said, she would play it for hours with her cat alongside her on the needlepoint bench she had made.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Henry D. Sanguinetti of Sonora; a son, Gary Carlsen of Colorado Springs, Colo.; four grandchildren, Sandra (Pulliam) and Jerry Linville of Magalia, Karen (Sanguinetti) and Benton Hembree, Susie (Sanguinetti) and Bill Gehri and David and Sue Sanguinetti, all of Sonora; nine great-grandchildren, David Greer, Sean Hembree, Stacy Helbling, Tami Ethier, Tim Sanguinetti, Kristin Bowker, Kevin Hoffman and Kelly and Kortni Gehri; seven great-great grandchildren, Nathaniel, Nehemiah and Rachel Sanguinetti, Gabriel and Cora Grace Ethier, Riley Joy Helbling, Madison Paige Hoffman and an expected grandchild, Olivia Love Helbling, who is due on Friday.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Swen, in 1992, a daughter, Shirley Pulliam, and a grandson, Randal Pulliam.

A memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, at Rivers of Life Christian Fellowship.

Francisco Edwin Lazzarino

Aug. 18, 1949 — Oct. 28, 2003

Francisco "Frank/Lazz" Edwin Lazzarino of Rail Road Flat died Oct. 28 at a Modesto hospital from injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident in San Andreas. He was 54.

He was born and raised in San Jose and had lived in Amador and Calaveras counties since the 1980s.

He was a self-employed truck driver all his adult life and was a Vietnam veteran.

His family said he belonged to and loved The Messengers "Clean and Sober" Motorcycle Club.

His family said he loved his friends and family.

Mr. Lazzarino is survived by his father, Nick Lazzarino of Sacramento; fiance, Bunny Stone of Rail Road Flat; stepdaughters, Samantha Stone of Rail Road Flat and Stephanie Lazzarino of California; a brother, James Welborn of California; and sister and brother-in-law, Sue and Sam Porter of Silver Springs, Nev.

A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at the Town Hall, Main Street in Mokelumne Hill.

Mary Rebecca Florence Los

July 8, 1920 — Nov. 2, 2003

Mary Rebecca Florence Los of Sonora died Sunday at a Sonora care home. She was 83.

She was born in Winnipeg, Canada, and was a homemaker for 63 years.

Her family said she loved her family, friends and good times.

She is survived by her sons, Denis and Patti Los and Dean and Katherine Los, all of Palo Alto; three daughters and a son-in-law, Diane Duerkop and Debbie and Mike O'Reilly, all of Sonora, and Carol Los of Sunnyvale; 11 grandchildren, Lisa Los of Fort Collins, Colo., David, Blaine and Jenna Los, all of Palo Alto, Jenelle Duerkop of Davis, Heather Duerkop of Rohnert Park, Taylor Carpenter of Sunnyvale, Tyler Carpenter of San Diego, Sarah and Brian Gundlach, both of Sonora, and Tyler O'Reilly of Twain Harte.

She was preceded in death by a son, David Los.

A graveside service is scheduled for noon Saturday, Nov. 15, at Alta Mesa Memorial Park Cemetery in Palo Alto.

Mabelle L. Pahlow

Oct. 24, 1915 — Oct. 31, 2003

Former Sonora resident Mabelle L. Pahlow died Friday at a San Jose hospital. She was 88.

She was born in Hay Springs, Neb., and lived in San Jose for 19 years and Sonora for eight years. She worked as a waitress at The Doll House in San Carlos for more than 20 years.

She enjoyed cooking, visiting with her friends and family and having them over for get-togethers.

She is survived by her daughters and a son-in-law, Linda F. and Hal Rupert and Dena J. Lucas, all of San Jose, and Wanda K. Bastible of Antioch; sons, Franklin A. Kaiser of Wyoming and Donald Kaiser of Idaho; a brother, Marion Hunter of Idaho; and sisters, Elaine Ross and Velma Quenzer, both of Idaho, Laura Belle Foster of Washington and Ruth Nunley of Roseville; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Adolph Pahlow, in 1984.

A private graveside service is scheduled at Skylawn Memorial Park in San Mateo.

Felmon Slater

Sept. 14, 1912 — Nov. 3, 2003

Longtime Sonora resident Felmon Slater died Monday at his home. He was 91.

He was born in Kansas and lived in Sonora for 23 years. He worked as a self-employed chiropractor in Salinas for 40 years. He was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses of Sonora.

His family said he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and life in general.

Mr. Slater is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Susan and DeWayne Gipe of Sonora; a son and daughter-in-law, Ted and Christine Slater of Sonora; a sister, Dorothy Clay of Kansas; granddaughters, Jenny Crum of Sonora, Cindy Roads of Salinas and Debbie Mesa of Elk Grove; and two great-grandsons, Christopher and Kyle Roads.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice Slater, in 1998.

No services are scheduled.

Cora Arvilla Campbell

Oct. 4, 1914 — Nov. 2, 2003

Cora Arvilla Campbell of San Andreas died Sunday at a San Andreas hospital. She was 89.

She was born in Cherokee, Okla., and lived in Sonora from 1945-55 and in San Andreas since 1990. She and her husband owned and operated Woodland Dry Cleaners in Los Altos and Oakhurst. She also had worked for Golden West Cleaners in San Jose.

She was active in the PTA in Soulsbyville School, and was active with her daughter in Girl Scouts.

She worked as a waitress at the Sonora Inn and Sullivan Creek restaurants in Sonora for many years. She was a charter member of Alanon International in San Jose. She was the last of 10 children.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Emmett (Buzz) Campbell of San Andreas; daughter, Millicent Hammill of Boca Raton, Fla.; four grandchildren, Dana Hammill of Boca Raton, Robert Nester of La Sal, Utah, Leona Van Gee of Virginia and Larry Kahl of Redondo Beach; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two children, Jane Nester and Lorana Kahl, and a grandson, Leonard Kahl Jr.

No services are scheduled.
