Longtime Sonoran Wenzel dead at 82

Eloise V. Wenzel

Sept. 13, 1921 — Oct. 29, 2003

Longtime Sonora resident Eloise V. Wenzel died Wednesday at a Modesto hospital. She was 82.

She was born in Los Angeles and lived in Sonora for more than 65 years.

She married Ted Wenzel of the pioneer Wenzel family, who owned and operated Wenzel's Clothing Store in downtown Sonora for 34 years. She was a homemaker and often helped out at the store, especially during the holidays.

She enjoyed traveling, her family said, and had visited several foreign countries and most of the United States. She had many hobbies, and one of them was making stained-glass lamps. She had a lot of artistic talent, her family said, and she also was an avid reader, often finishing several books in a week.

In recent years, she put in an extensive rose garden at her home, and watching them grow and caring for them brought her immense pleasure, her family said.

She was a member of the 39er Luncheon Club.

She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Lena of Sonora; son, Jerry Wenzel of Strawberry; brothers and sister-in-law, Dr. Robert E. and Liz Mitchell of Pensacola, Fla., and Richard Mitchell of Merced; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Audrey and Bill Servente of Sonora and Ellen and John Spiller of Los Alamitos; granddaughters, Shelly Stockton of Petaluma, and Tami Pink, and her husband, Scott, of Granite Bay; five great-grandchildren; and a great-great granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, F.E. "Ted" Wenzel, and by her parents, George and Jessie Mitchell.

A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. tomorrow at Heuton Memorial Chapel.

Eileen Parrington

July 20, 1908 — Oct. 30, 2003

Longtime Sonora resident Eileen Parrington died Thursday at a Sonora hospital. She was 95.

She was born in Des Moines, Iowa, and had lived in Sonora since 1969. She was a homemaker and was in the first class of graduates at the current location of UCLA.

Her family said she loved visiting family and friends in Pleasant Hill, Ill., where she grew up on the Jennings family farm.

She was a member of the American Association of University Women in Sonora, Sonora Regional Horseless Carriage Club, Tuolumne City Memorial Museum and the Sonora Women's Antique Club.

Her family said she enjoyed gardening, reading and antiques.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Thomas E. and Augusta Parrington of Pasadena; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Paul Kruetzfeldt of Sonora; grandchildren, Gregory Parrington of Portland, Ore., Desmond Parrington of Sacramento, Keith Kruetzfeldt of Santa Rosa and Daniel Kruetzfeldt of Lodi; and four great-grandchildren, Thomas, Scott, Megan and Zachary.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas M. Parrington, in 1993.

A private family graveside service is scheduled at Morgan Chapel Cemetery.

Ruby Ann

Hammon

Jan. 14, 1912 — Oct. 31, 2003

Ruby Ann Hammon of Groveland died Friday at a Sonora hospital. She was 91.

She was born in Jackson, Ala., and lived in Groveland for 18 years. She was a homemaker and a member of the Groveland Evangelical Free Church and Church of Nazarene in Richmond. She was an avid Bible reader and enjoyed flower gardening and cooking.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, John Hammon of Groveland; a daughter and son-in-law, Ethel Ann and Francis Watson of Orinda; sisters, Margaret Merrit and Anne Connolly, both of Ohio; a sister-in-law, Mary Lou Spurgeon; grandchildren, Ron and Jeff Sapp, Debbie Brasier and Gina McCauley; and six great-grandchildren, Sheena, Cameron, Britney, Connor, Meghan and Fiona.

Visitation is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home, followed by a chapel service at noon. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in Groveland.

Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

R. Maxine

Sullivan

Sept. 17, 1917 — Nov. 2, 2003

Longtime Columbia resident R. Maxine Sullivan died Sunday at a Sonora hospital. She was 86.

She was born in St. Joseph, Mo., and grew up in Topeka, Kan. She lived in San Francisco for 30 years and moved to Columbia in 1974.

She worked as a medical claims examiner for California Physician's Insurance Company for 10 years.

She worked at an airbase in Kansas during World War II, where she was an aircraft co-pilot. She loved gardening and her dog, Omar, her family said.

Her family said she was grateful for all her friends and was known for her wit and irreverence.

She was a member of the Columbia Presbyterian Church of the 49ers in Columbia, Aronos Club and Mother Lode Seniors.

She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Dondero of Murphys; grandson, Gabe Webster of Murphys; a granddaughter, Kaili Cooper of Beaverton, Ore.; nieces, Jerry Harper of Escalon and Kay Starkson of Topeka, Kan.; and cousin, Phyllis Brock of Overland Park, Kan.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Sullivan, in 1989.

A private family memorial service will be held. Burial will be at Columbia City Cemetery.
