James ‘Jim' Richard Haigh

Oct. 30, 1905 — Nov. 15, 2003

James "Jim" Richard Haigh of Sonora died Saturday at a Sonora care home. He was 98.

He was born in Evanston, Ill., and was raised in Michigan. He had lived in Sonora since 1996 and previously lived in Grass Valley for 30 years.

He worked as a lineman for 40 years for PG&E. He worked as a lumberjack at age 14 and entered the U.S. Navy at age 16. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He was a past member of the Masonic Lodge.

His family said he liked to hunt and fish.

Mr. Haigh is survived by his wife of 78 years, Lillian Haigh of Sonora; a daughter, Lillian Pantaleoni of Twain Harte; a son, Richard Haigh of Castle Rock, Colo.; four grandchildren, Gary Pantaleoni of Auburn, Jan Odell, and her husband, Don, of Castro Valley, Brian Haigh of Castle Rock, Colo., and Kristi Resseguie of Fox River Grove, Ill.; eight great-grandchildren, Megan, Adam and Mauri Resseguie of Fox River Grove, Julie Pantaleoni of Davis, Lauri Pantaleoni of Auburn, Sabrina Ford of Elk Grove and Connor and Alex Haigh, both of Castle Rock; and a brother, George Haigh of Redwood City.

Private family services will be held at a later date.

Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Gladys Mildred Autrey

June 2, 1926 — Nov. 15, 2003

Longtime Calaveras County resident Gladys Mildred Autrey died Saturday at her home. She was 77.

She was born in Alabama and lived in Murphys and Angels Camp for 30 years. She worked for 27 years as an executive secretary for an industrial firm. She served as past president of the Angels Camp Soroptimists and was a member of the La Contenta Nine Holers Golf Club.

She is survived by her husband, Ben Autrey of Murphys; a sister, Bess Haymes of Fair Oaks; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Carole Autrey.

A service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday at Angels Memorial Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice of the Sierra, P.O. Box 4805, Sonora, CA 95370.

Angels Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

Doreen Marie Stone

May 9, 1933 — Nov. 14, 2003

Longtime Sonora resident Doreen Marie Stone died Friday at her home. She was 70.

She was born in Salinas and grew up in Spreckels. She graduated from Salinas Union High School. She married her high school sweetheart, Ron Stone, on Feb. 2, 1951.

She was a homemaker and lived in Salinas until 1968, and then in King City until moving to Sonora in 1974.

Her family said she was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Stone is survived by a daughter, Rhonda Rhyan of Sonora; a son, Gary Stone of King City; and a grandson, Ronald Barnes of Sonora.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Lori Ann Stone.

A funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m. tomorrow at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home.

Donations can be made to the Visiting Nurse Association, Hospice of the Sierra, P.O. Box 4805, Sonora, CA 95370.

Arlene Ruth Grant

Sept. 21, 1918 — Nov. 13, 2003

Lifelong Murphys resident Arlene Ruth Grant died Thursday at a Sacramento medical center. She was 85.

She was born in Murphys and lived there her entire life.

She was a homemaker.

She married James Grant on Dec. 7, 1941, at the First Congregational Church in Murphys. The next day, Jim left for World War II.

She was a lifelong member of the First Congregational Church in Murphys and sang in the choir. She was a church historian. She was a member of the Tanner family, a pioneer family of Murphys, and was the last of her generation.

She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Crescent Chapter in Murphys, Native Daughters of the Golden West in Murphys and the Calaveras Garden Club. She entered flowers at the Calaveras County Fair for many years.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, James Grant of Murphys; sons and daughters-in-law, James and Carole Grant Jr. of Little Rock, Ark., and Robert and Diane Grant of El Dorado Hills; a daughter, Nancy Grant of Sacramento; three grandchildren and their spouses, Caroline Grant of Sherwood, Ark., Patricia Grant Munnell and Doug Munnell of Marietta, Ga., and Scooter and Jaime Grant of North Little Rock, Ark.; and two great-grandchildren, Cassie Munnell and Jacob Grant.

Visitation is scheduled from 1-6 p.m. today at Angels Memorial Chapel. A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Congregational Church in Murphys.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the First Congregational Church, P.O. Box 48, Murphys, CA 95247 or Native Daughters of the Golden West, Ruby Parlor No. 46, P.O. Box 1874, Murphys, CA 95247.
