William ‘Bill' Atha

Jan. 14, 1932 — May 2, 2003

William "Bill" Atha, 71, of Sonora died Friday at a Sonora hospital.

Mr. Atha was born in Wichita Falls, Texas, and had lived in Sonora for the past 27 years.

He was the quarterback for the state champion football team when he was in high school in Mount Pleasant, Mich.

He worked in the aerospace industry for 13 years. He was an engineer for the Aerospace Corp. in El Segundo for seven of those years. He worked on the Titan III Missile Program.

Mr. Atha served in the Navy during the Korean War, where he was a radar engineer on the P2V Neptune plane.

He attended the University of Colorado, where he received a scholarship for playing golf. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in business.

He was the inaugural president of the men's club at Mountain Springs Golf Course, a member of the Sonora Elks Lodge and coached Pop Warner football and Little League baseball. He wrote a book about pitching, was an avid space fan and contributed to the Smithsonian's new space wing.

He is survived by two sons, Bill Atha II of Malibu, and Tom Atha of Los Angeles; two daughters, Kerry Atha of Atlanta, and N.L. Rafferty of San Francisco; and a brother, Robert Atha II of Torrance.

A memorial service was to be held today at Heuton Memorial Chapel with burial at Mountain Shadow Cemetery in Sonora.

Wilger Harold Hutchins

July 25, 1921 — May 4, 2003

Wilger Harold Hutchins, 81, of Sonora died Sunday at a Palo Alto veterans hospital after a long illness.

Mr. Hutchins was born in Santa Rosa and had lived in Sonora since 1935.

He was an Army veteran of World War II.

During his career as a log truck driver, he worked for Alderman Logging, Hatler Logging, Westside Lumber Co. and Pickering Lumber Co. He was a member of the Sawmill and Lumber Workers Union.

Mr. Hutchins also was a former member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and loved playing the harmonica and enjoyed his home, his family said.

Mr. Hutchins is survived by his wife of 39 years, Dorothy Hutchins of Manteca; two sons Will "Bill" Hutchins of Sonora and Robert "Bob" Hutchins of Idaho; two daughters, Karen Steel of Reno, Nev., and Diane Livingston of Sonora; a stepdaughter, Joni Drake of Stockton; two sisters, Shirley Spiva of Sonora and Dorothy "Edrie" Wooley of Napa; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A private family burial will be held at Mountain Shadow Cemetery. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

William Foster Fletcher

Nov. 6, 1929 — May 3, 2003

William Foster Fletcher, 73, of Arnold died Saturday at his home.

Mr. Fletcher was born in Morgantown, W.Va., and had lived in Arnold for the past 31 years.

He served in the Army for eight years, before joining the Coast Guard, where he served for 14 more years. He retired in 1972 as a chief engineman.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans.

He is survived by many friends.

No services were held at his request. Inurnment will be private. Angels Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

RADFORD — A service for Herman Cedric Radford, 87, who died Sunday, will be at 1 p.m. tomorrow at the San Andreas Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Henry Sweeney.

JEFFRIES — Alma Jeffries, 81, died yesterday at her home in Twain Harte. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

ROLSTON — James Rolston, 93, of La Grange, died there yesterday. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

WILSON — Florence Wilson of Sonora, 101, died yesterday at Tuolumne General Hospital. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

SMALLING — Alvin Smalling, 71, died yesterday at his home in Columbia. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

ARTHUR — Zilda Mary Arthur, 94, died Monday at Amador Residential Care in Jackson. A graveside service will begin at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Buena Vista Cemetery in Murphys. Angels Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
