Oct. 6, 1952 — April 25, 2014
Richard Danny Evans passed away peacefully in Merced on April 25, 2014, after a courageous battle with leukemia.
Born in Merced on October 6, 1952, to Mike and Jennie Evans, Richard developed a special affinity with animals through his first job at Dr. Barger’s Veterinary Clinic. He kept a variety of animals throughout his life, from dogs and cats to birds, rabbits and guinea pigs.
Possessing a true green thumb, Richard had many award winning garden scenes at the Merced County Fair and had spectacular and intoxicating gardens everywhere he lived. His love of the great outdoors was evidenced by countless camping trips to Yosemite and Kennedy Meadows, two of his favorite places. In 1981, he made the decision to move to Twain Harte to live in the mountains he loved so much.
In May of 1982, Richard began his career journey, mastering the art of bartending where his quick wit, unique sense of humor and jovial personality were enjoyed by all.
A lifelong diehard San Francisco Giants fan, he was ecstatic to see them win not one, but two World Series championships. He made several trips to Spring Training in Arizona in recent years, the last being this past March. He considered this a highlight of his life.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Mike and Jennie Evans; and a brother, Michael Evans.
He is survived by his brother, Steven Evans; sister, Jeanne Evans; three nephews, Nels Nelsen, Aaron Evans and Eric Evans; niece, Erika Fowler and numerous cousins.
The family would like to thank our cousin Patti (McMaster) Elam and her husband David Elam for caring for Richard for the last six months of his life and ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Cancer Society or Bristol Hospice.
A celebration of life will be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at the Twain Harte Golf Course.
