Donn Doerr

Aug. 12, 1923 — May 5, 2014

Donn Doerr, my dad, passed from this life onto the next in the same manner that he lived; quietly and without a fuss. Dad went on to be with our Lord Jesus Christ and Dad’s beloved wife of 67 years, my mom, Connie Doerr, who passed away last year.

Mom and Dad met at Cal Berkeley in 1941, where Dad played football for the Cal Bears before World War II came along. Dad was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1946. He served on the USS Anthony and saw battle in Iwo Jima and Okinawa and throughout the Pacific Theater. He then returned to play varsity football for the Cal Bears in 1946 and 1947 during the Pappy Waldorf era.

Dad then became an industrial engineer in Oakland where he and my mom raised me and my sister. My mom and dad then moved to Sonora and built their dream house some 28 years ago.

Dad was actively involved in the Boy Scouts for more than 50 years. He was a world class fly fisherman and taught many a young man how to fish. Dad caught a record trout in Lake Tahoe in the 1950s. He rarely spoke of any of his life’s achievements — except for maybe the fishing part.

Dad is survived by his brother Rodney; his daughter Linn; his son Rodd; and his grandson Jack.

A special thanks to all the friends and neighbors who helped my dad through the loss of my mom and made it possible for him to continue living at home as he wished.

My beloved Mom and Dad are together again in paradise. They are now continuing the journey they started together at Cal Berkeley over 70 years ago. It is this gift of life that God has so graciously bestowed upon them. Upon us. It was an honor to have you as my dad. I will truly miss you. — Rodd.
