Stacy Lynn Apley

Nov. 20, 1963 — May 12, 2012

Murphys resident Stacy Lynn Apley died Saturday at her home of cancer. She was 48.

Mrs. Apley was born in Portola, the daughter of John and Janice Holland, of Greenville, Plumas County.

She graduated from California State University, Chico, with majors in psychology and child development. For more than 20 years, she worked with families and young children, most recently for the Stanislaus County Office of Education.

She married Kent Apley in 1997 and the couple had three children, Logan, Kinlye and Caden.

With her family, she was active in local sports teams, Christian Family Learning Center and cancer awareness activities. She was diagnosed with cancer after Caden’s birth six years ago.

She earned several awards and recognition in the field of early childhood education.

Mrs. Apley was preceded in death by her sister-in-law, Lezlie Holland, and her father-in-law, Carl Apley.

She is survived by her husband, Kent Apley, of Murphys; children, Logan, Kinlye and Caden; brothers, Daryl Holland, of Chico, and Chris Holland and his wife, Kirsten, of Portola; her mother-in-law, Jean Apley, of Murphys; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Grant and Val Apley, of Angels Camp; her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Colleen and Joe Hancock, of Murphys, and Carla and Larry Smith, of Murphys; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A service will be held at 1 p.m. May 26 at Foothill Community Church in Angels Camp. For more information, call 736-9338.

Angels Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

Eugene Holgar “Gene” Johnson

May 11, 1940 — May 8, 2012

Eugene Holgar “Gene” Johnson died of a sudden illness May 8 while walking near his Sonora home. He was 71.

Mr. Johnson served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Merchant Marines. His family said he was a man of all trades, including wood working, tree climbing and operating heavy equipment.

He lived in Sonora for four years.

Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his sister, Sylvia Wakely; and his parents, Sally and Bill Johnson.

He is survived by his children, Mike E. Johnson, of Alderpoint, Humboldt County, Dorene L. Lewis, of Fortuna, Humboldt County, Kim Johnson, of Eugene, Ore., and Nichole Tubbs, of Myrtle Point, Ore.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and his brother, Ivan Johnson, of Sonora.

No services are planned.

Carol Stella Cross

Dec. 25, 1917 — May 10, 2012

Sonora resident Carol Stella (Flentge) Cross died May 10 at Avalon Care Center, where she moved four weeks ago from her Sonora home. She was 94.

A 33 year resident of Sonora, she was born in Parkfield, Monterey County, the daughter of Oscar De Kalb Flentge and Mildred Flentge. She was married to Ira “Al” Cross, in Yuma, Ariz. They were missionaries to the Congo, Dahomey and Ivory Coast, Africa, from 1940 to 1979. They celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary a week before she died.

Mrs. Cross was preceded in death by her daughter, Cherie Cross-Dotinga; her grandson, Christopher Brinkley; siblings, Leora (Flentge) Spotswood, Donald Flentge, Lois Flentge Lowry and Beth Flentge McLane.

She is survived by her husband, Ira “Al” Cross, of Sonora; her children and their spouses, Jeannie and Guy Bowen, of Sonora, and Margie and John Wall, of Waldport, Ore.; and three grandchildren, Donoven Bowen, of Sonora, Caleb Brinkley, of Sonora, and Rosie Brinkley, of Las Vegas.

A service was to be held at 3 p.m. today at Grace Baptist Church, 19765 Grace Way, Sonora. Donations may be made in her name to the church.

Melvin Eugene Newland

Dec. 15, 1949 — May 1, 2012

Copperopolis resident Melvin Eugene Newland died May 1 at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Stockton. He was 62.

A retired millwright, he was known for rarely missing a sporting event, concert, play or any other activity involving any of his four grandchildren. He was known locally as the flower guy for his green thumb and thriving garden, his family said. He lived in Copperopolis for 20 years. 

Mr. Newland was preceded in death by his father, Harold Newland.

He is survived by his mother, Juanita Fern Newland, of Clear Lake; his wife of 18 years, Kathleen Newland, of Copperopolis; his daughter, Shaney McPoland, of Angels Camp; grandchildren, Morgan McPoland and Lily McPoland, of Angels Camp, and Benjamin Kinser and Dylan Kinser, of Woodland; and siblings, Jack Newland, of Manteca, Ace Newland, of Clear Lake, and Wendy Woods, of Clear Lake.

A celebration of life will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. May 27 at the Black Creek Center, Black Creek, Copperopolis.

Kathleen Debra “Kathy” Wood

Dec. 2, 1951 — May 13, 2012

Tuolumne County native and longtime resident Kathleen Debra “Kathy” (Davey) Wood died Sunday at her Turlock home. She was 60.

She was born in Sonora and graduated from Jamestown Elementary School, then Sonora High School in 1969. Her first marriage was in 1970, during which she gave birth to three children. She was married for the second time to John Wood in 1985.

She was employed at Ingomar Packing Company in Los Banos in 1987 as a stock room clerk and left there to work for Hershey’s in Oakdale as a bagging operator from 1999 to 2004. She moved to Turlock in 2011.

She is survived by her mother, Patricia Davey, of Jamestown; her husband of 27 years, John Wood, of Turlock; her children and their spouses, Kimberly and Chris Perez, of Modesto, Kevin and Bobbie Carne, of Denair, and Matt and Kelli Carne, of Turlock; grandchildren, Crosby Perez, Haven Perez, Avalon Perez, Gabrielle Perez, and Lauren Perez, all of Modesto, Shelby Miller, Peyton Miller, Jace Carne and Brenden Carne, all of Denair, and Emma Carne, of Turlock; her sister, Christine Thompson, of the Sacramento area; and her brother, Rick Davey, of Jamestown.

She was preceded in death by her father, Richard “Dick” Davey.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home in Sonora. Inurnment will be private at Mountain Shadow Cemetery in Sonora. 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Emanuel, P.O. Box 819005, Turlock, CA 95381.

Terzich and Wilson is in charge of arrangements.
