Rachel Mary Clarke

May 12, 1914 — May 12, 2003

Rachel Mary Clarke, a longtime resident of Twain Harte, died Monday, on her birthday, at a Stockton nursing home after a long illness. She was 89.

She was one of seven children and lived in Oregon as a child before moving to Gilroy as a teenager. After graduating from Gilroy High School and Santa Cruz Secretarial College, she moved to San Jose for work. She met and married Donald R. Clarke. They lived and raised a family in Cupertino. Upon retirement, they moved to Twain Harte and have lived there for 28 years.

Mrs. Clarke was active in the Twain Harte Women's Golf Club, the Sierra Pines Women's Golf Club, the Twain Harte Women's Club and the 50 Plus Club. She loved cooking, entertaining, gardening and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Donald R. Clarke of Twain Harte; a daughter, Donna King of Twain Harte; a son, Eric Clarke of Napa; four sisters, Eudora Pierce of Medford, Ore., Mina Borland of San Jose, Juanice Colby of Florida and Cozette Cermak of Santa Cruz; three granddaughters, Michele Taylor of LaHonda, Annette Beyer of Discovery Bay and Stephanie Clarke of Las Vegas, Nev.; a grandson, Mitchell Clarke of Napa; four great-grandsons, Justin Taylor of LaHonda, Trevor Taylor of Florida, and Nicholas and Clarke Beyer, both of Discovery Bay; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Soulsbyville United Methodist Church, 19982 Community Drive in Soulsbyville. The Neptune Society is handling arrangements.

James Johnston

Feb. 3, 1911 — May 10, 2003

James "Jim" Johnston, a longtime resident of Twain Harte, died Saturday. He was 92.

He was born in Oakland to John Service Johnston of Dundee, Scotland, and Mary Hendry of New Jersey.

Mr. Johnston married Enid Jamison in 1934. He retired in 1971 from Nor Cal Metal Fabricators after 25 years, after working with sheet metal, as his father did. He repaired World War II ships that came into Alameda during the war. He loved mathematics and difficult puzzles and owned airplanes, boats, motorcycles and sports cars.

He fulfilled his lifelong desire to join the Masons and the Shriners. He was a member of Aahmes Shrine Temple in Livermore, Eastbelt Tuolumne Masonic Lodge No. 8 in Sonora, Mother Lode Shrine Club, Masonic Luncheon Club, Stockton Scottish Rite and was a 58-year member of the Sheet Metal Workers Association.

Mr. Johnston is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Bobbie and Dick Randall of Sonora; two grandchildren, Dr. Jeff Randall of Piedmont and Jill Gregori of San Leandro; and five great-grandchildren. He and his dog, Sparky, were bachelors together for 10 years.

His wife of 57 years, Enid, preceded him in death in 1991.

A celebration of life is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Soulsbyville United Methodist Church. Memorial donations can be made to Shriners Children's Hospital, 2425 Stockton Blvd., Sacramento, CA 95817. He will be laid to rest at Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

MCCONNELL — Geraldine McConnell, 99, died Monday at her home in Columbia of natural causes. A private graveside service is scheduled at Columbia City Cemetery. A memorial service is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. tomorrow at Angelo's Hall in Columbia. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

PLOTNER — Frances A. Plotner, 89, died Monday at her Sonora home. A funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home. Visitation is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. tomorrow at the funeral home. A burial is scheduled at Mountain Shadow Cemetery. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
