April 27, 1935 — May 4, 2004

Former Browns Flat resident Ruth (Forester) Cearley died May 4 at a Redding hospital. She was 69.

She had lived in Browns Flat for many years. She attended Columbia Elementary School and graduated from Sonora High School in 1953. She worked as a family nurse-practitioner for 30 years. After retirement, she moved to Shingletown, Shasta County, where she lived for seven years.

She is survived by her husband, Jerry Six of Shingletown; sons, Patrick of Oakland and Michael of Reno, Nev.; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter.

Family services were held in Shingletown.

Allen and Dahl Funeral Chapel in Palo Cedro, Shasta County, handled arrangements.

Gayle Anita Frey

April 23, 1921 – May 8, 2004

Longtime Sonora resident Gayle Anita Frey died Saturday at a Sonora hospital. She was 83.

She was born in Fort Morgan, Colo., and lived in Sonora for 22 years. She worked as a real estate saleswoman at various agencies for 16 years. She was a member of the Tuolumne County Association of Realtors. She also was a member of Christian Heights Assembly of God in Sonora and was active in the Young at Heart Group at the church.

She made ceramic dolls, was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed traveling, her family said.

Her family added that she especially enjoyed her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and family.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Marcia and Phil VanSwoll of Columbia and Nita and Alan Iwig of Auburn, Wash.; grandchildren, Laurie Lauricella, Chris Frey, Denise Fyfe, Stacy Moskus and Matthew Tennison; great-grandchildren, Nichole and Bobby Fyfe and Tyler Lauricella; and a brother, J Wesley Pierce of West Covina, Los Angeles County.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Frey; a son, Clinton Frey; and a sister, Jean Norskog.

A memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at Christian Heights Assembly of God.

Clarence Richard ‘Dick' Nelson

Dec. 23, 1915 – April 30, 2004

Clarence Richard "Dick" Nelson of Sonora died April 30 at his home. He was 88.

He was born in Los Angeles and was the second of four generations of candy makers at Columbia Candy Kitchen.

His family said he enjoyed ornithology — a branch of zoology dealing with birds — when he was a young boy, and was an accomplished flower and vegetable gardener, his family added. He worked for Pacific Bell Telephone Company, now known as SBC, in Or-ange County for 23 years and consulted for NASA at the Kennedy Space Center in Orlando, Fla.

He and his wife traveled extensively in the United States and Mexico before retiring to Baja in 1962. He moved to Columbia in 1966, coming out of retirement to learn his late father's trade of candy making.

His family said he was generous and loved his friends and family.

Mr. Nelson is survived by his children, Michael, Douglas and Christine; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Olamae; and his friend, Barbara Taft.

A family gathering will be held in his honor in July.

Neptune Society in Fresno is handling arrangements.


SHAW — Florence Shaw, 86, of Soulsbyville died yesterday at her home. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
