Barrie Lyn Conrad Nov. 26, 1949 March 3, 2005 Longtime Tuolumne resident Barrie Lyn Conrad died unexpectedly Thursday at her home. She was 55. She was born in Charleston, S.C., and was the only daughter of Oliver B. "Jerry" and Ruth "Terry" Owen. After living in South Carolina and Maryland for a number of years, the family moved to Southern California when she was about 5 years old. She attended high school in Venice, Los Angeles County, and moved to Groveland in 1970. She most recently lived in Tuolumne for 34 years. Her family said she was a devoted mother and homemaker, and she had dedicated her whole life as a young mother to her children. When she was not fully involved with her sons' activities, she completed her associate's degree at Columbia College. She worked as an interior designer at Frankie's Interiors of Twain Harte and Interior Mo-tives in Sonora. She also taught a dance exercise class called "Dance-rgetics" in Sonora and Twain Harte, for which she had a legendary ability, her family said. She was known for her friendliness and was a good listener who was deeply loved by all who knew her, her family said. She is survived by her husband of 28 years, Christopher Conrad of Tuolumne; sons and daughter-in-law, Titus L. and Jodi Wieland of Sugar Pine, and Timothy LeCompte; grandchildren, Rose Marie and Robert Lee Wieland, both of Sugar Pine, and Timothy Jr. and Joseph LeCompte, both of Mi-Wuk Village; stepgranddaughters, Brittany and Danielle Alonzo, both of Mi-Wuk Village; a daughter-in-law, Julie Alonzo, and her husband, Dan, of Mi-Wuk Village; a brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Susan Owen of Riverside; a sister, Julie Muckey of Redding; stepmother, Roberta Owen of Redding; mother-in-law, Frances Conrad of Sacramento; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Warren and Joy Conrad of Turlock, Mark and Nancy Conrad of Kelseyville, Lake County, Tyler Conrad of Exeter, Tulare County, Lucinda and Dan Metz of Palm Springs, Suzanne Conrad of Sacramento; and nieces and nephews including a niece, Anna Michelle Blade and her husband, Jason, of Southern California, and nephews, Emory and Eric, both of Redding. She was preceded in death by her parents. Visitation is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home. A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church of Sonora. Margarita Evans Jan. 14, 1945 March 6, 2005 Longtime Valley Springs resident Margarita Evans died Sunday at a San Andreas hospital. She was 60. She was born in Kimberly, Nev., and had moved to Jackson in 1946. She attended Jackson Elementary School and graduated from Jackson Union High School in 1963. She met and married Frederick E. Evans in 1965 and moved to Calaveras County. She lived in Valley Springs for 40 years. She worked for Valley Springs Grammar School and Calaveras High School until she retired in 1995. She is survived by her husband, Frederick Evans of Valley Springs; a daughter, Melissa Meadows of Augusta, Ga.; sons, Mike Evans and Mitchell Evans, both of Valley Springs; sisters, Mary Guiffra and Ruby Hill, both of Jackson, Gloria Salisbury of Minden, Nev., and Emma Gonzales of Pioneer, Amador County; brothers, Richard Gonzales of Ione, Amador County, Herman Gonzales of North Shore Camanche, Amador County, Eddie Gonzales of Carson City, Nev., Jesse Gonzales of Jackson and Paul Gonzales of Amador County; half sisters, Gloria Balderrama, Emma Cortez of Arizona, Olga Godinez and Aurora Monreal, both of Southern California, and Hortencia Ramirez of Lomita, Los Angeles County; and a granddaughter. She was preceded in death by a brother, Cipriano Gonzales. A memorial service will be held at a later date. San Andreas Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements. Opal Iona Smalling Sept. 11, 1924 March 7, 2005 Longtime Jamestown resident Opal Iona Smalling died Monday at her home. She was 80. She was born in Glenwood, Ark., and had lived in Jamestown since 1972. She was an interior design specialist from 1972 to 2004. She worked for Mother Lode Flooring and Abbey Carpet by McCurley in Sonora. She was a member of the Cannery Workers Union Local No. 679 and Sonora Baptist Church for many years. Her family said she enjoyed crafts and flower gardening. She is survived by her daughter, Marcine Ann Smalling of Modesto; a son, Karl David Smalling of Sonora; and brothers, Carlos Caldwell of San Pablo, Contra Costa County, Clifford Caldwell of Martinez, Contra Costa County, and Raymond Caldwell of Salem, Ore. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Smalling. Visitation is scheduled from 10 to 11 a.m. tomorrow at Sonora Baptist Church. A church service is scheduled at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the church. David Wayne Smith May 16, 1984 March 6, 2005 Copperopolis resident David Wayne Smith died Sunday at his home after a long illness. He was 20. He was born in Modesto and lived there before moving to Copperopolis one year ago. Mr. Smith is survived by his brother, Jimmy Smith of Yreka, Siskiyou County; a sister, Christina Clark of Copperopolis; his father, James Smith of Yreka; and his mother, Lynne Smith of Modesto. Private family services will be held at a later date. Angels Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements. Robert Bob' H. Johannes Dec. 18, 1956 March 3, 2005 Sonora resident Robert "Bob" H. Johannes died unexpectedly Thursday at his mother's Sonora home. He was 48. He was born in Kansas City, Mo., and had lived in Sonora for 17 years. He worked in the grocery trade for 25 years. He worked as a store manager at John's Sierra Market in Sonora for five years, then as an awning installer for King Parrish Canvas & Graphics in Sonora for two years. His family said he enjoyed Nascar, football, camping, fishing and hunting. He enjoyed being with his daughters, family and his Labrador retrievers most, his family added. Mr. Johannes is survived by his ex-wife, Beth Johannes of Sonora; his mother, Sarah Johannes of Kansas City and Sonora; daughters, Haley Anne Johannes, Ashley Kae Johannes and Samantha Rae Bailey-Johannes, all of Sonora; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Richard Page of Kansas City, Debbie and Larry Kemp of Hurst, Texas, Nancy and Ed Freitas of Fremont and Sara Beth and James Pelis of Rayville, Mo.; 12 nephews; seven nieces; a grandnephew; and four grandnieces. A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at Heuton Memorial Chapel. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements. Eugene Virgil Romero June 13, 1918 March 6, 2005 Longtime Sonora resident Eugene Virgil Romero died Sunday at a Sonora hospital. He was 86. He was born in Santa Rita, N.M., and had lived in Sonora since 1946. He worked as a forklift operator for Leonard Jones Lumber Mill in Soulsbyville for 30 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific. He was a member of Knights of Columbus. Mr. Romero is survived by his wife, Jean Romero of Sonora; a stepdaughter and caregiver, Susan Hawkins of Oakdale; and numerous nieces and nephews. Private family burial is scheduled at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Sonora. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements. |
