Betty R. Barton

Aug. 5, 1926 — March 19, 2014

Betty Rose Barton, died Wednesday, March 19, at the Avalon Care Center.

Betty migrated to California from Missouri with her mother and two sisters in the 1940s. As a teenager, she worked at a North Hollywood nursery which sparked a life-long love of plants and gardening.

Eventually the family settled in Tuolumne County where she met and married Edwin Barton. Together they ran the Wishing Well and her fried chicken dinners were widely know in the 1950s. In addition to raising three children and being involved in their activities, she worked as a waitress most of her adult life. A familiar face at several local dinner houses, customer service was her specialty. She used that skill working as a grocery checker at Roy’s E-Z Mart where she was a friend to all and was rarely without a joke to share.

In her retirement she learned sign language and was proud to have participated in a summer camp for the deaf. This proved to be a useful skill for her. When she lost her speech after her stroke she was still able to communicate through sign language.

The Catholic Church was an integral part of her life. She taught after-school catechism classes at St. Ann’s Church in Columbia, was active in the Y.L.I., a founding member of the Save Our St. Ann’s committee and was instrumental in organizing a radio-thon to raise funds to restore the historic church. As a volunteer docent at St. Ann’s, she gave tours and shared the history of the church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin; mother and stepfather, Alice and Eugenio Caruso; and her sister, Nadine Wright.

She is survived by her sister, Norma Ghirorso, of Sonora; her children and their spouses, Denise and Dick Rogers, Lyle and Cheryl Barton and Brian and Robin Barton, all of Sonora; her grandchildren and their spouses, Greg and Melissa Rogers, Nate and Nicole Rogers, of Sonora, Joe and Lindsey Barton, of Prairieville, La., Hannah and Nick Baldrige, of Watsonville, Holly Barton, Abby Barton, of San Jose, Brett Barton, of Sonora; and ten great-grandchildren.

Private services have been held.
