Mitchel Hunt

Jan. 3, 1923 — Feb. 23, 2007

Long-time Sonora resident David Mitchel Hunt died Feb. 23 at his home in Sonora of natural causes. He was 84.

He was born Jan. 3, 1923 in Walnut Grove, NC. He graduated from Berea High School in Berea, NC.

He entered the Marine Corps on April 9, 1941 and served in Quantico, Va., Guadalcanal, New Britain, New Guinea and Australia. He was awarded five battle stars, a Presidential Unit citation and a Good Conduct medal. He achieved the rank of corporal.

He married Billie Jo Hunt in April 1944 and moved to the San Francisco Bay Area.

Mr. Hunt was a member of the Teamsters Union Local No. 85, working as a truck driver.

He retired to Sonora in 1987, but worked part-time at Sierra Motors until his death.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Elks Lodge, Calvary Chapel in Sonora, and Mt. Zion Church in Oxford, NC.

He enjoyed sports and playing cards, travel and music.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Billie Jo Hunt; son-in-law Kenneth B. Gibson; and parents, Joe B. and Annie D. Hunt.

He is survived by a son, Mitchel Lee Hunt of Gilroy; a daughter, Toni Michele Gibson of Sonora; his brother, J. Daniel Hunt of Oxford, NC; niece, Ann Kathryn Parham (Hildred) of Oxford; nephew, J. Daniel Hunt of Durham, NC; and several great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.

Services are planned for 11 a.m. Monday at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home.

A luncheon and Elks ritual will follow the services at the Sonora Elks Lodge.

Terzich and Wilson is handling arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society of Tuolumne County, 10040 Victoria Way, Jamestown, CA 95327; the Elks Lodge Building Fund, 1587 Elks Drive, Sonora, CA 95370; or the Arthritis Foundation, by calling (800) 283-7800.

Gladys O.

Scoggins

Nov. 3, 1913 — Feb. 28, 2007

Longtime Calaveras County resident Gladys O. Scoggins died Wednesday at a Jackson care home. She was 93.

Mrs. Scoggins lived in Valley Springs for more than 30 years. She also lived in Brentwood and Concord for many years, and lived in Jackson for two years.

She was a member of Oakley's Pocahontas Council, WI-CHA-KA-222 in Contra Costa County for more than 50 years.

Mrs. Scoggins was preceded in death by her husband, Everett Scoggins, in 1974.

She is survived by her youngest son of Valley Springs; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Idaho, Missouri and California.

A graveside service will be held at Byron-Brentwood Cemetery in Contra Costa County. Call the Brentwood Funeral Home at (925) 634-2171 for the time and date.

In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Scoggins wanted people to make donations in her memory to the First Missionary Baptist Church in Valley Springs.

Doris Mae

‘Dorie' Williams

June 20, 1927 — Feb. 18, 2007

Doris Mae "Dorie" Williams, a part-time resident of Groveland, died in Hayward on Feb. 18. She was 79.

A native of Berkeley, she graduated from Berkeley High School and was married to her childhood sweetheart, Thomas W. Williams, on June 27, 1946.

They moved to Hayward in 1959 and owned a second home at Pine Mountain Lake in Groveland since 1974.

She decorated both homes in shades of blue. Other interests included dancing to the music of the 1950s.

Mrs. Williams is the daughter of "Fred" Oier of Norway and Emmy Hegberg of Sweden.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Dr. George Oier of Oakland, and her sister, Mildred Hamm of Santa Rosa.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Williams is survived by her son, Tom, and his companion, Kimberly Francis of Tracy; and her daughter, Diane, of Hayward; and granddaughters Angie and Jenny Sommer; and her lifelong friend, Marge "Sis" McCoy of Oakdale.

No services will be held at her request. Neptune Society is handling arrangements. Donations may be made in her name to the Regional Cancer Foundation, 1200 Gough St., Suite 500, San Francisco, CA 94109. It was founded by Bay Area surgeon Dr. William Lister Rogers, who was Mrs. Williams' brother-in-law.

Francis

Chamberlin

Feb. 4, 1927 — Feb. 27, 2007

Longtime Tuolumne resident Francis Chamberlin died Tuesday at a Sonora care home. He was 80.

Mr. Chamberlin was born in Ryegate, Vt. He lived in Tuolumne for 49 years, and was manager of a service station in Mono Vista for 20 years.

He served in the U.S. Army in 1945 and 1946.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Doris Chamberlin of Tuolumne; a daughter, Jocelyn Ginnever of Deerfield, Mass.; two sons, Gregory Chamberlin and Dale Chamberlin, both of St. Johnsbury, Vt.; a brother, Kenneth Chamberlin of Monroe, N.H.; two sisters, Marilla Elder of St. Johnsbury, Vt. and Lois Prescott of Montpelier, Vt.; and five grandchildren.

At his request, no services are planned. Heuton Memorial Chapel handled arrangement.

Edna Mae

Gordon

Nov. 1, 1921 — Feb. 26, 2007

Edna Mae Gordon of Jamestown died Monday at a Sonora hospital. She was 85.

Mrs. Gordon moved to Jamestown three years ago from Castro Valley, where she was a cafeteria cook for 30 years.

Her hobbies included traveling, knitting, cooking and spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Penny Trotter.

Survivors are her daughters, Doreen Aguilar of Oakland, and Patricia Horen of Brentwood; grandchildren, Michael, Connie, Tammy, Debbie, Stacy and Kim; nine great-grandchildren, and a brother, Vic Souls of Washington.

At Mrs. Gordon's request, no services are planned. Cremation has taken place.

Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home handled arrangements.
