Brandon Babbitt

July 11, 1925 — March 14, 2004

Longtime Sonora resident Brandon Babbitt died Sunday at his home. He was 78.

He was born in San Antonio and moved to California as an infant. He lived the majority of his life in Tuolumne until moving to Sonora six years ago.

His family said he loved singing at home and in church. Gardening was one of his joys and gardens flourished at his touch, his family added, and he spent his life loving his children and their families.

He met his wife of 49 years, Helga Babbitt, while serving in Germany during World War II.

Mr. Babbitt is survived by his six children and their spouses, William Babbitt and Anna Mena and Karen Babbitt and Dan Rainbolt, all of Jamestown, Charlene and Dave Mainville of Tuolumne, and Daniel and Nina Babbitt, Benjamin and Sharon Babbitt and Brandon and Elenna Babbitt, all of Sonora; a brother and sister-in-law, Ernest and Marie Babbitt of Turlock; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helga Babbitt; an infant son, Carl; brothers, Donald "Donny" Babbitt and Melvin Goodrich; and a sister, Charlene Goodrich.

Private family services are scheduled.

Gordon ‘Roy' Coleman

Nov. 6, 1937 — March 12, 2004

Longtime Twain Harte resident Gordon "Roy" Coleman died Friday at his home from cancer. He was 66.

He was born in Wellsville, Ohio. He lived in Twain Harte since 1980. He served in the U.S. Air Force and retired as a master sergeant. He graduated from California State University, Stanislaus, with a master's degree in public communications. He was owner and operator of Income Property Repairs in San Jose, Sacramento and Sonora. He worked as a handyman for property managers. He also worked as a teacher for Sierra Conservation Center for five years and received an Assistant Teacher of the Year award in 1995.

Mr. Coleman is survived by his wife of 23 years, Susan Coleman; a brother, David Coleman of Celina, Ohio; sons, Ray Coleman of Modesto and James Glayde Coleman of Twain Harte; a daughter, Lauri Coleman of Hanford; stepson, Jeffery Riley of Clinton Township, Mich.; a stepdaughter, Kimberly Riley-Oliver of Sacramento; and 16 grandchildren.

A gathering for family and friends is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at the Coleman home.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Visiting Nurse Association, Hospice of the Sierra, P.O. Box 4805, Sonora, CA 95370.

Velma Lavada Cook

July 24, 1931 — March 12, 2004

Former Tuolumne County resident Velma Lavada Cook died Friday at her Palo Verde home in Imperial County. She was 72.

She was born in Mulberry, Ark. She had lived in Tuolumne for six years and Jamestown for three years before moving to Palo Verde. She worked as a home health care aid and worked at Cresthaven Care Home in Soulsbyville.

Her family said she enjoyed gardening, painting, country music, yard sales, traveling and especially her family and grandchildren.

She is survived by her sons, O'dell and Michael Cook, both of Palo Verde, and Kenneth Cook of Fresno; daughters and son-in-law, Katherine Cook of Palo Verde, Marilyn and Richard Strong of Jamestown and Brenda Uptain of Albuquerque, N.M.; a brother, Jay Hutchison of Palo Verde; sisters, Lou Allen of Mulberry and Sue Hutchison and Jeanette Rafferty, both of Oakdale; 20 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Cook, in 1972, and by a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Cook, in 1963.

Visitation is scheduled from 9-11 a.m. Friday at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home. A graveside service is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Friday at Copperopolis Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Richard Strong, Bryan Rodriguez, Tony Reyes, Emery Nelson, Bobby Wilson and Frank Selmeczki.

Victor A. ‘Bud' White

Dec. 20, 1913 — March 10, 2004

Former longtime Sonora resident Victor A. "Bud" White died last Wednesday at a Modesto care home. He was 90.

He was born in Manhattan, Kan., and lived in Sonora for more than 55 years. He worked at Pickering Lumber Company for more than 30 years and later retired from the company. He was a member of the Sonora Elks Lodge, Sportsmen and Sonora Moose Lodge.

His family said he enjoyed traveling, fishing, walking, talking with friends and dark chocolate.

Mr. White is survived by his daughters, Charlotte White of Stockton, Susan Dennis of Fair Oaks, Kathy Blood of Cave Junction, Ore., and Jean Grimbleby of Modesto; a sister, Eva Koppa of Davis; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Hazel White, in 1998.

A memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday at the Sonora Elks Lodge.
