Pitts Riedel

Sept. 22,1935 - June 3, 2004

Sonora native Leola Riedel died Thursday at a care home in Paradise, Butte County. She was 68.

She was born in Sonora, where she attended grammar school and graduated from Sonora High School in 1953.

Mrs. Riedel was a school teacher in Campbell, Santa Clara County, for 24 years, was active in the Chico Newcomers group and performed with the Sweet Adelines singing group Mission Valley San Jose for many years. In the early 1990s, she also was the lead singer in a quartet called The Premiers. They entertained on two cruises to Hawaii and Alaska.

Mrs. Riedel is survived by her husband of 38 years, Bob Riedel; her children, Laurie Adams of Elk, Wash., Chris MacDonald of Lafayette, Colo., Doug Riedel, Mike Riedel and Bonnie Riedel, all of Florida; 9 grandchildren and two great grandchildren; her sister Kathy McCready of Chico; and sisters-in-law Sue Ann Burge of Fresno and Evie Baldwin of Sacramento.

Donations can be made to Hospice House, Memorial Gardens Fund, 1289 Billie Road, Paradise, CA, 95969. No services will be held at her request.

‘Steve' Stephens

Jan. 16, 1920-June 7, 2004

Longtime Tuolumne resident James H. "Steve" Stephens died Monday at a Sonora hospital. He was 84.

Mr. Stephens was born and raised in Talladega County, Ala. At the age of 19, he came to Tuolumne County with the Civilian Conservation Corps as a cook, then went to work for Westside Lumber Company in Tuolumne as a sawyer and mechanic. He worked alongside his father-in-law, Gene Day, plowing roads for Tuolumne County. Mr. Stephens retired from Calaveras Asbestos Ltd. as a heavy equipment mechanic.

He was a member of the Laborers Union, the Sonora Moose Lodge and the Sonora Bowling Association. Family members said he was a hard-working man who loved, gardening, fishing and dancing.

Mr. Stephens is survived by his wife of 26 years, Carol Stephens of Tuolumne; daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn and Larry Webb of Modesto, Charlene Allen and Jane and Lyle Crabtree, all of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Tiffany and Tim Flavin of Sonora; son and daughter-in-law, Nathan and Sarah Stephens of Oakland; brothers Guy Stephens, Carroll "Dink" Stephens and Jackie Stephens, all of Alabama; sister Dorothy Alldridge of Alabama; an aunt and cousin, Jonne and Laura Zahm of Sonora; a sister-in-law, Ruth McIntyre and her husband, Dick, of Twain Harte; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews in Alabama.

He also is survived by brothers-in-law Victor Day and Calvin Day; sisters-in-law Louise Griffin and Leona Applequist; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, including Barbara Persson — all of Tuolumne and all members of the Me-Wuk Tribe.

Mr. Stephens was preceded in death by his first wife, Gertrude Day Stephens, in 1977, his brother John Stephens, and sisters Ruth Scott and Beryl Powers, of all Alabama.

A memorial potluck will be held at 6 p.m. tomorrow at the Tuolumne Me-Wuk Tribal Hall. Private burial will be at Carter's Cemetery in Tuolumne.


BIRCH - Dorothea Birch, 93, died Monday at a care home in Sparks, Nev. Birch was a longtime resident of Jamestown. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling the arrangements.

DINARDO - Sonora resident Dolores T. Dinardo, 73, died Tuesday at a Sonora hospital. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
