Richard John Butow

June 24, 1937 — June 4, 2013

Jamestown resident Richard John Butow died Tuesday at his home. He was 75. 

Mr. Butow was born in San Francisco to Fred and Catherine Butow. 

He graduated from Junipero Serra High School in San Mateo in 1955 and joined the U.S. Air Force Air National Guard the same year. 

He married Joan Dorothy Rojas in 1957.

Mr. Butow bought 400 acres known as Hog Mountain in Jamestown in 1984 and established Sliding H Horse Ranch. 

He continued to serve around the globe in the U.S. Air Force until 1997, retiring from the same base he started at, Moffet Federal Airfield in Mountain View. His rank was chief master sergeant. 

Mr. Butow was a lifelong National Rifle Association member. 

He enjoyed fishing, hunting and riding horses.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Joan Dorothy Butow in 2003; and his parents. 

Mr. Butow is survived by his children, Richard Butow Jr., of Hollister, Col. Steven Butow, of San Jose, Deborah Peterson, of Sonora, Timothy Butow, of Jamestown, and Michael Butow, of Jamestown; sister, Ellen Emma, of Hollister; and eight grandchildren. 

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home, 225 E. Rose St., Sonora. 

Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements. 

Amy Alice           (Hobbs) Stein

July 12, 1917 — May 31, 2013

Sonora resident Amy Alice (Hobbs) Stein died May 31 at her home. She was 95.

Mrs. Stein was born in Ogden, Utah, to Ida and Fred Hobbs. 

She grew up in Alameda and graduated from Alameda High School. 

Mrs. Stein lived in San Leandro with her first husband, Harold Newman. 

She spent most of her life as a homemaker. 

Mrs. Stein lived in Twain Harte with her second husband, Roy Stein, for over 20 years before moving to Sonora. 

She had owned a cabin in Mi-Wuk Village with her sister before that. 

Mrs. Stein was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and Twain Harte Women’s Golf Club. 

She enjoyed sewing, knitting, crafts, reading and travel. 

Mrs. Stein was preceded in death by her first husband, Harold Newman; and second husband Roy Stein; sister, Margarette Hobbs; brother, Fred Hobbs; and her parents. 

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Fredrick P. and Karen Newman, of Angels Camp; sisters, Arline Lewis, of Redwood City, Grace Clark, of Oakland, and Patsy Bernard, of Modesto; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

No services will be held at her request. 

Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

ZWINGE — A funeral service for Richard Zwinge, 78, of Columbia, who died Monday at Sonora Regional Medical Center, will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home, 225 E. Rose St. His burial will follow at Mountain Shadow Cemetery, Lyons Bald Mountain and Greenley roads, Sonora. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
