Joyce Carol (Elmen) Lewis

Columbia resident Joyce Carol (Elmen) Lewis died May 29 at Sonora Regional Medical Center in Sonora. She was 84.
Mrs. Lewis was born in Roundup, Mont., to Walter Felix and Orpha Marie Elmen.
She moved to California in her late teens and attended the University of Southern California, where she graduated in 1951 with a bachelor’s in business science.
She worked at Union Oil Co. in Los Angeles for several years before marrying Keith A. Lewis in 1950 and starting a family.
Mrs. Lewis was an artist, specializing in fine art painting. She was a long-time member and former president of the La Habra Art Association in Southern California.
After being widowed for several years, she married Roy Taplin in 1995.
Mrs. Lewis moved to Columbia in 1999 following the death of her second husband.
Besides painting, she enjoyed reading, quilting and playing the piano. She was a member of the Red Hat Society, traveled extensively and wrote four books about family and her experiences abroad.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, Frank Elmen; and a sister, Helen McCormick.
Mrs. Lewis is survived by children and their spouses, Llynn Lewis and Eric Davenport, of Chatsworth; Bart and Charlotte Lewis, of Yorba Linda; and Scott and Debra Lewis, of Columbia; and six grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at 23550 View Lane, Columbia.

Robert Lee ‘Bob’ McDaniel
July 12, 1933 — May 16, 2013
Jamestown resident Robert Lee “Bob” McDaniel died May 16 at his home. He was 79.
Mr. McDaniel was born in Long Beach to Eugene Fields McDaniel and Laura McDaniel.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1955, receiving three medals for bravery.
He worked in maintenance for Oscar’s restaurant in the Glen Lake area in Oakland for 17 years.
Mr. McDaniel moved to Jamestown in 1987 and began gold panning, mostly in Woods Creek.
He enjoyed gold trivia, carving ivory and bone sculptures and painting.
Mr. McDaniel was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Roland Edward McDaniel.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Kathryn McDaniel, of Jamestown; children, Rebecca McDaniel, of Sonora, LeRoy McDaniel, of Jamestown, and Nathan McDaniel, of Paradise; and grandchildren, Heather and Christopher Hopson, of Sonora, Paeten Maples-McDaniel, of Sonora, Ethan Sayers, of Jamestown, and Donovan McDaniel, of Jupiter.
A graveside service and burial with full military honors will be held 1 p.m. June 20 at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, 5810 Midway Road, Dixon.
