Raymond Wayne Ghiorso

Nov. 30, 1932 — June 9, 2014

Ray was born and raised in Columbia, Calif., the son of Christina and Jerome Ghiorso.

Ray graduated from Sonora High School in 1950 and, after working a few years, spent two years in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955.

He married the love of his life, Darlene (Rountree) in 1956. Ray and Darlene settled in Modesto and raised their family.

Ray worked for Greyhound for 30 years and was known around town by everyone who shipped their packages through Greyhound. Ray also worked for 10 years as a custodian at Beyer High School.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Darlene; his children and their spouses, David and Loni Ghiorso, Lorie and Harold Parsons, Pam and Steve Rock and Daniel and Beth Ghiorso; 12 grandchildren, Christy, Nathan, Amy, Tim, Melissa, Kathleen, Joe, Tyler, Jason, Mike, Sarah and Joshua. He was also able to enjoy one great-grandchild, John. Ray’s surviving siblings include his sister, Ina and her husband Ted Kassahn and brother Ronald Ghiorso and his wife Joyce and their families.

Our extended family’s support for one another has made life, and death, a continuous support group session.

Ray had an amazing quadruple bypass in 1998 which allowed him 16 bonus years before pancreatic cancer finished his story. As a husband and father Ray has shown his family (and friends) how to live an honest, hard working, caring and humble life. Ray’s sense of humor and genuine interest in others in conversation will be greatly missed.

On behalf of Ray and his family, we would like to thank the staff at Doctors Medical Center and Hospice for their amazing help.

A gathering was held at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Modesto on June 21.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church Memorial fund or a charity of your choice.
