Sept. 17, 1920 – June 20, 2004

Geraldine Whitten of Ponderosa Hills died Sunday at a Sonora hospital. She was 83.

She was born in Blackburn, Okla., and lived in Ponderosa Hills for two years with her daughter, grandson and great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Cherokee Nation.

She married Neal Sikes in 1942 and moved to California in 1954. She worked for the California Highway Patrol and was the first paid crossing guard, her family said.

Her first husband preceded her in death.

In 1959, she went to work for Superior Heating and Sheet Metal as an accountant until 1974, when she married Bert S. Whitten of Sonoma. She lived in Sonoma until 2002.

Her family knew her as "ice-cream grandma."

She is survived by her daughter, Jean Worthington; stepchildren, Ed Whitten of Fortuna, Humboldt County, and Carol Jackson and Jim Whitten, both of Sonoma; grandsons, David and Joey Worthington, both of Ponderosa Hills; great-grandchildren, Ricky and Davinelle Worthington, both of Ponderosa Hills, and Taymen Joseph Worthington of Jamestown.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bert S. Whitten; stepsons, Bob and Charles Whitten of Sonoma; and grandsons, Ricky N. Worthington and Jimmy Whitten.

A graveside service is scheduled for 2 p.m. tomorrow at Valley Cemetery in Sonoma.

At the family's request, donations can be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, 2425 Stockton Blvd., Sacramento, CA 95817, in the name of Taymen Joseph Worthington.
