Ernest McConnell

Sept. 19, 1924 — June 15, 2012

Jamestown resident Ernest McConnell died June 15 at his home. He was 87. 

Mr. McConnell was born in Durango, Colo., and graduated high school in 1942. He joined the U.S. Army following high school. He served with Gen. Patton’s Army through France, Germany and Belgium. He was in the Battle of the Bulge. He married his first wife Connie in 1946 and she died in 1976. He married Peggy Angen in 1992. They enjoyed football, card groups, round and square dancing and danced with the Twain Harte Twirlers. They lived in Jamestown for 22 years. He was in the Sons in Retirement group and enjoyed traveling with the SIRs RV group. He was a member of the 49er Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Elks Lodge. 

Mr. McConnell is survived by his wife, Margaret “Peg” McConnell, of Jamestown; his son, Dan McConnell, of Madera; his stepson, Rocky Angen, of San Jose; his stepdaughter, Susan Hammer, of Bonny Doon, Santa Cruz County; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Columbia Presbyterian Church.

Marjorie K. ‘Marge’ Harrington

Aug. 14, 1917 — June 10, 2012

Marjorie K. “Marge” (Buckmaster) Harrington, of Hess Estates, died Sunday at Avalon Care Center. She was 94.

She was born Aug. 14, 1917, in Calhan, Colo., to Percy and Myrtle Buckmaster. She graduated from Sonora High School in 1936 and married S.A. Harrington on May 1, 1937. They moved to Tuolumne in 1938, then to their present home, which they built, in 1961.

She enjoyed traveling with her sisters to Greece, Egypt, Great Britain, Belgium, Switzerland, France, Australia, Hawaii and Singapore. Her hobbies were reading, sewing, needlepoint and knitting.

She was preceded in death by a son, Jim, in 1967; and three siblings.

She is survived by her husband of 75 years, S.A. “Curly” Harrington, of Hess Estates; her son, Bill Harrington; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and siblings, Joe, Tom, Shirley, Audrey and Richard.

At her request, no services will be held.

Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Rosalie Marie ‘Rosie’ Watson

March 30, 1916 — May 31, 2012

Rosalie Marie “Rosie” Watson, of Jamestown, died May 31 at Casa Viejos Assisted Living in Jamestown. She was 96.

Mrs. Watson was born March 30, 1916, in Oakland, the daughter of Antonio and Mamie (Avelar) Machado. She lived in the same home where she was born on East 15th Street in Oakland, living on her own and driving until she was 94.

She moved to Jamestown two years ago to be close to family.

She was secretary for Alameda County Social Services for 35 years. Her interests included trips to Reno and Tahoe to play bingo. She was a member of the Catholic Church, several senior citizen groups and the Alameda County Employees Retirement Association.

She enjoyed going to San Francisco to fancy restaurants and collecting their menus. Other interests included watching television game shows such as “Jeopardy,” “Wheel of Fortune” and “Match Game.” As a child, she enjoyed visits with her Uncle Wayne to Tuolumne County and Yosemite. She was an avid supporter of the police and fire departments in Oakland.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Watson was preceded in death by her husband, James Watson; her daughter, Carol Ann De La Rosa; her son, Robert James Watson; and her brother, George Machado.

She is survived by a son-in-law, Ray De La Rosa, of Valley Springs; a daughter-in-law, Billy Watson, of Tuolumne; grandchildren, Lisa, Denice, Stephen, Bryan, Tina, Keith, Sharon and Bobby; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Private family services will be held with inurnment will be at Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland.

Patricia (Lane) Luepke

April 6, 1952 — June 11, 2012

Sonora resident Patricia (Lane) Luepke died June 11 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. She was 60. 

Mrs. Luepke was born in Minnesota and lived in Sonora for 27 years. She was a retail clothing area supervisor for 20 years. 

She enjoyed music, camping, picnics and reading. She was a member of Sierra Bible Church. 

Mrs. Luepke is survived by her husband, Patrick Luepke, of Sonora; her parents, King and Barbara Lane, of Couer d’Alene, Idaho; her daughter, Elizabeth Luepke, of Sonora; brothers, Steve Lane, of Serverville, Tenn., and Mike Lane, of Hayden, Idaho; sisters, Carol Clark, of Newport Beach, and Nancy Demere, of San Juan Capistrano; and one grandchild. 

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Billie Dean Stills

May 14, 1929 — June 16, 2012

Campo Seco resident Billie Dean Stills died June 16 at Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital. She was 83.

Mrs. Stills was an Arkansas native. She and her husband moved to California after a tornado destroyed their home. She lived in Antioch for many years. 

She was a homemaker and enjoyed playing bingo and cooking fried catfish, greens, black eyed peas, cornbread and homemade beans.

Mrs. Stills was preceded in death by her husband, Emmett Stills; and her children, Michael Stills and Marion Stills.

She is survived by her children, Danny Stills and Brenda Decko; grandchildren Teresa Stills and Glenda Weber; and three great-grandchildren. 

A viewing will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday with a memorial service to follow at 1 p.m. at San Andreas Memorial Chapel, 254 W. St. Charles St., San Andreas.
