Lawrence J. Hearn

July 8, 1919 — June 9, 2003

Lawrence J. Hearn of Sonora died June 9 at his residence. He was 83.

He was born in Omaha, Neb., to Joseph and Nora Hearn. They moved to Placerville in 1925, where he grew up. He lived in Sonora for 14 years.

He enjoyed athletics and won the state championships in doubles tennis as a teenager, his family said.

He attended the University of California, Berkeley, and served in Italy during World War II. After the war, he graduated from San Jose State, where he majored in journalism.

He worked at Watkins Johnson Electronics in Palo Alto for 40 years, but his love was always in writing, his family said. While working in Palo Alto, he lived in Los Gatos for 20 years. In his spare time, he and his wife, Betty, wrote and did the photography for hundreds of magazine articles. He was a quiet man who loved to read, go to the library, go to church, write and go for long walks with his wife. He cared for her during her one-year battle with cancer, and often remarked that she could never be replaced, his family added.

Mr. Hearn is survived by two daughters, Sandi Greenwell of Sonora and Barbara Garcia of Salinas; a son, Fred Price of Redding; two sons-in-law, Patrick Greenwell of Sonora, and John Garcia of Salinas; 10 grandchildren, Erica, Angie, Jamie and Joshua Greenwell all of Sonora, Debbie Cartmill of Salinas, John Garcia of San Diego, Becky Garcia of Portland, Ore, and Mike, Kenny and Shawn Price, all of Redding; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty.
