Dixie (Thomas) Pappas

Sonora resident Dixie (Thomas) Pappas died May 18 at Avalon Care Center of Sonora. She was 87.
Mrs. Pappas was born in San Angelo, Texas, to Gertrude (Hammond) and Charles Foster Thomas.
Her parents were farmers and farmed in California, Arkansas and Texas but lived primarily in the Patterson-Grayson area.
She attended a business college in Modesto for a year.
Mrs. Pappas leased a farm in Los Banos from 1949 to 1953.
She moved to Tuolumne to be closer to family in 1958.
She was a longtime resident of Tuolumne County, and lived in Sierra Village, Columbia and 45 years in Browns Flat.
Mrs. Pappas worked as a waitress for many years at various restaurants including 35 years at the Europa Cafe in downtown Sonora. She was also an area supervisor for Jafra Cosmetics, which she sold for 25 years.
She was a member of the First American Baptist Church (now the Journey Church) for more than 50 years.
She enjoyed Bible study, cooking, entertaining, and traveling throughout the United States, Canada and Hawaii. She also enjoyed gardening and cared for more than 100 rose bushes, her family said.
Mrs. Pappas was preceded in death by her husband of 22 years, James Pappas, in 1996; her mother, Gertrude (Hammond) Thomas, in 1952; her father, Charles Foster Thomas, in 1966; her brothers, Cecil, Lloyd, Lyle, Calvin, Earl and Bert Thomas; sisters, Lydia Fant and Rosalia Friesen; former husband, Martin J. Sheldon, in 1990; and sons-in-law, Donald M. Wright, in 1987, and Gary Tillis, in 2005.
She is survived by five children, three stepchildren and their spouses: Tim and Dena Shelton, of Jamestown, Deborah and Joe Poole, of Sonora, Cynthia Tillis and Carlos Guidino, of Borrego Springs, Diana Shelton, of Borrego Springs, Daniel and Michelle Shelton, of Oregon, Paul and Mary Jane Pappas, of Longwood, Fla., Diane O’Donnell, of Denver, Colo., and Dorothy Casalvo, of Reading, Mass.; sister-in-law, Vivian Thomas, of Ben Lomond; three grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren and their spouses: Obadiah Tillis, of Ramona, Sara Patrick, of Los Angeles, Lucas Shelton, of Jamestown, Richard Butler, Tim Butler and Randy and Melissa Morgan, all of Jamestown, Matt and Kelli Poole, of Sonora, Max Berry-Shelton, of Oregon, Aerial Berry-Shelton, of Oregon, and Bradley and Jessica O’Donnell, of Arlington, Mass; three great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life officiated by Pastor Ray Shopp will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Journey Church, 14425 Mono Way, East Sonora.

Lois Ann (Smith) Rosenbaum
Jan. 28, 1936 — May 29, 2013
Groveland resident Lois Ann (Smith) Rosenbaum while traveling in Tennessee on May 29. She was 77.
Mrs. Rosenbaum was born in Athens, Ohio, to Orin and Lillian Smith.
She moved to Danville in 1976 and retired to Groveland in the early 1990s.
Along with her husband, she was a founding member of the Friends of the Lake Association, the annual swim race and the Fourth of July boat parade at Pine Mountain Lake.
She was a member of the Groveland Evangelical Free Church.
Mrs. Rosenbaum was preceded in death by a son, Douglas Rosenbaum, in 1985.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Richard R. Rosenbaum, of Groveland; her children and their spouses, Joseph and Kristin Rosenbaum, of Moraga, James Rosenbaum, of Carmichael, and Linda and Steve Rhodes, of Danville; grandchildren, Tyler, Ryan and Kyle Rhodes, of Danville, and Connor and Hunter Rosenbaum, of Moraga.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. June 22 at the Groveland Evangelical Free Church, 19172 Ferretti Road.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made the Food Closet at the church.

PETERS — A visitation for Alva Joan Peters, 88, of Sonora, who died Sunday at her home, will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Thursday at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home, 225 E. Rose St., Sonora. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Mountain Shadow Cemetery, Sonora. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Chapel in the Pines, 18580 Cherokee Drive, Twain Harte.
