Kurt Laurence Vassar

Oct. 15, 1954 — July 24, 2003

Kurt Laurence Vassar of Sonora died Thursday at his residence of complications from an accident 13 years ago. He was 48.

He was born in Salinas and had lived in Sonora since he was 2 years old. He was a professional musician and traveled with several bands all around the United States. He played bass. He graduated from Sonora High School in 1972.

His family said he loved his grandsons and cats. He enjoyed Christian rock music, loved reading the Bible and going to church, his family said, and talked about how Jesus saved his soul. He had a green thumb, enjoyed gardening and liked to laugh and visit with his friends, his family said.

Mr. Vassar is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Christy Vassar of Sonora; a daughter, Janet Vassar of Sonora; two grandsons, Eric and Brian James, both of Sonora; a brother and sister-in-law, Brad and Caroline Vassar of Newport Beach; a nephew, Brad S. Vassar of Newport Beach; a niece, Laura Vassar of Newport Beach; a stepbrother, Scott Chester, and wife, Jeanie, of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; a half sister, Denise Vassar of Maui, Hawaii; and his parents, Marie and Scott Chester of Sonora.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Michael Vassar, in 1994, and by a stepsister, Valarie Chester Arbet, in 2002.

A church service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church of Sonora, 14425 Mono Way, Sonora. Burial will be at Mountain Shadow Cemetery.

Beverlee J. Allen

Feb. 22, 1923 — July 23, 2003

Former Tuolumne resident Beverlee J. Allen of Stockton died Wednesday at a Stockton hospital. She was 80.

She was born in San Francisco and lived in Tuolumne for 24 years before moving to Stockton one year ago.

Her family said she loved to garden, travel and go on cruises. She loved family get-togethers during the holidays and entertaining, her family said. Her favorite charity was Mountain Women's Resource Center in Sonora. She volunteered her time and services for the Nutmeg Club at Eden Hospital in Castro Valley.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Jerrian and Jack Brown of Escalon; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert Craig and Marcia Allen of Oakland; a brother, Gerald Dower of Santa Rosa; and two grandsons, Oliver Allen and Jeff Brown.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Robert Claude Allen.

At her request, services will be private.

Arthur Douglas ‘Art' Weston

May 15, 1927 — July 24, 2003

Arthur Douglas "Art" Weston of Sonora died Thursday at his residence. He was 76.

He was born in Berkeley and lived in Sonora for 16 years.

He was an operating engineer in construction for about 40 years and was a member of Operating Engineers Union Local No. 3.

He was a Navy veteran, having served in the Pacific during World War II, and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 2922 in Oakdale. He also was a member of Moose Lodge No. 255 since 1988.

His family said he was a caring man to everyone and was known as "Art" and "Grandpa." He enjoyed the simple life and the outdoors, fishing, mountains and guns, his family said. He was an animal lover, his family added, and had a great love for family and friends.

Mr. Weston is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Vickey and Henry Gerhart of Sonora; two sons, Michael Weston of Fresno and Steven Arthur Weston, and his fiance, Teresa Miller, of Sonora; two grandchildren, Jared and Jamie Gerhart both of Sonora; and his friends, the Divine, Gerhart and Morgan families.

A celebration of life and potluck are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Posse clubhouse in Jamestown.

Margaret

Anderson

July 25, 1939 — July 27, 2003

Margaret Anderson of San Andreas died Sunday at her residence. She was 64.

She was born in England and lived in San Andreas for 15 years. She was a homemaker and a high school graduate. She was active at the Calaveras Senior Center.

She is survived by her husband, Walter Anderson of San Andreas; a daughter, Cindy Anderson of San Andreas; a brother, Alfred Goodwin of England; three sisters, Janet Goodwin, Pearl Reynolds and Sylvia Brown, all of England; and a grandchild, John Manyose of San Andreas.

A service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at San Andreas Memorial Chapel.
