Juliann Riggs, of Columbia, passed away in her home on July 20, 2014. She was 61 years old. She was born Juliann Scarpelli in Spokane, Wash., on April 16, 1953. She was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. She was a kind and thoughtful person who always attended to the need of others.
Juli received a bachelor’s degree in the humanities from Eastern Washington University. She worked as a teacher’s aide for several years, including as a special education aide at Sonora High School. She was an active member of the Sonora Branch of AAUW, a longtime member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, and was also active in a number of civic and charitable causes throughout Tuolumne County.
In her retirement, Juli enjoyed babysitting her grandchildren each week. She enjoyed reading, traveling and spending time with her family. She was also an accomplished pianist, potter and author.
She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Jim; her three children, Jessica Brandt, of Carmichael, Erin Gross, of Folsom, and Andrew Riggs, of Hudson, N.Y.; and three grandchildren. She is also survived by her mother, Therese Scarpelli, of Spokane, and seven brothers and sisters.
Juli was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Scarpelli.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Aug. 9 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sonora.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Juliann Riggs Memorial Scholarship Fund that has been established by the Sonora Branch of the American Association of University Women through the Columbia College Foundation. Raymond Liedlich died of natural causes at home. He is survived by his wife, family, friends and the students of a 56-and-a-half-year teaching career. At Raymond’s request, no services are planned.

KOLLECK — Martha Kolleck, 96, of Sonora, died Wednesday at Sonora Regional Medical Center’s long-term care unit. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
McDONALD — Thomas “Mac” McDonald, 79, of Sonora, who died July 13 at his home, was inurned at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella. Donations in his memory can be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home handled arrangements.
MUSE — A memorial service for Olivia (Queirolo) Muse, 94, of Sonora, who died July 12 at her home, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Grace Baptist Church, 19765 Grace Way, Sonora. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
