Clifford C. Hughes

April 18, 1940 - July 15, 2014

A loving husband, father and grandfather, known for his quick wit, Cliff Hughes passed away on July 15, 2014.

He was born and raised in California, attended Sonora Union High School and then Amador Valley High School in Pleasanton, Calif., where he excelled in swimming and honed his singing and acting skills in the Glee Club and in drama productions.

After graduating, he attended the University of San Francisco, adding Rifle Club and ROTC to his list of activities. Cliff graduated with a degree in business administration and then served in the U.S. Army before settling into family life and a 44-year career in administration at the University of San Francisco, his last position as director of purchasing.

Cliff was a member of the Pleasanton Playhouse Community Theatre, enjoyed attending his children’s music and sporting events and vacationing in Santa Cruz and Jamestown with his family and friends.

He retired to Twain Harte to live his dream of “playing with trains all day” by volunteering with his friends at Railtown 1897 State Historic Park in Jamestown. The public saw him in his uniform as station master, as the Railtown Train Parade Float Engineer and he helped restore the much publicized Caboose No. 7.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Ruthie.

He is survived by his six children, Madonna (Dan), Mark (Kris), Don (Tina), Cheryl (Joe), Chris and Melissa (Erik); his 16 grandchildren, Laura, Danielle, Amanda, Ian, Alex, Emily, Jordan, Abigail, Holley, Ruthie, Christopher Jr., Tyler, Hunter, Madison, Tanner and Grady; his two great-grandchildren, Presley and Tennessee; his siblings, Tom (Dorie) and Greg (Marilyn), and his best friend, Alan.

Family and friends are invited to attend his memorial service on July 25, 2014, 10 a.m. at Mountain Shadow Cemetery, Sonora, California.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Railtown 1897 State Historic Park to help his fellow volunteers keep the dream alive.
