Darlene (Weimer) Simmons

Jamestown resident Darlene (Weimer) Simmons died Saturday at Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson. She was 78.
Mrs. Simmons was born in Los Angeles to Jess and Ruth Weimer.
She worked for 13 years as a VIP reservation specialist at a hotel in Laughlin, Nev. She retired in 2001 and moved to Tuolumne County eight years ago.
She enjoyed cooking, sewing, crocheting and knitting.
Mrs. Simmons was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Robbins, in 2012.
She is survived by her husband, Douglas Simmons, of Jamestown; five children and their partners, Samantha Machado and Mike Barbera, of Thousand Oaks, Stephanie and Michael Porter, of Vallecito, Denise Robbins and Tom Gallagher, of Arnold, George and Sandy Robbins, of Arnold, and Cam Matthews of Florence, Ariz.; two brothers, Dale Weimer, of Kansas City, Kansas, and Jerry Weimer of Texas; five step-children; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Private services are planned.

Frances Marie (Volponi) Tilley Steffen

Sonora resident Frances Marie (Volponi) Tilley Steffen died Tuesday at Avalon Care Center of Sonora. She was 97.
Mrs. Steffen was born Frances Marie Volponi on the Volponi Ranch in the Jamestown area to Louis and Hazel (Damin) Volponi.
She graduated from Sonora High School in 1933.
She lived in Tuolumne County until moving to San Carlos with her son, after the end of her marriage to Harold Tilley Sr.
While working on the docks in San Francisco during World War II she met sailor Bert Steffen.
They married and lived in San Diego before settling in Sonora. They moved to Stockton in 1959 but returned to the area upon retirement in 1979.
Mrs. Steffen worked as a secretary for Women’s Aglow in Stockton for a number of years and also volunteered at Stockton State Hospital, where she trained as a nurse’s aide.
She enjoyed cooking, embroidering, crocheting, stamping and card making as well as writing poetry.
She attended various Mother Lode churches including St. Patrick’s in Sonora, Christian Heights Assembly of God and Family Worship Center.
Mrs. Steffen was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Bert Steffen, in 2003; parents, Louis Volponi and Hazel (Damin) Volponi; son, Harold Tilley Jr., in 2005; great-grandson, Kristopher Dickey, in 2010; and son-in-law Robert “Bob” Reed, earlier this year.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, John and Ann Steffen, of Hilmar, Julie Reed, of Soulsbyville; stepson, Jerry Armstrong and his wife, Bridget, of Wash.; grandchildren, Michael Tilley, of Orangevale, David Tilley, of Citrus Heights, Scott Steffen, of Hilmar, Kevin Steffen, of Ore., John Bert Steffen, of Hilmar, Tom Steffen, of Hilmar, Kurt Armstrong, of Wash., Kim Cross, of Salida, and Steffenie Dickey, of Scotts Valley; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home, 225 E. Rose St., Sonora. A graveside service will follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Sonora.

EPPERSON — Gary Epperson, 71, of Jamestown, died Thursday at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
ZADA — Raif Zada, 64, of Sonora, died Thursday at home in Sonora. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
