Maj. Douglas

P. Hibbs

April 21, 1934 — July 14, 2003

Maj. Douglas P. Hibbs, a resident of Jamestown, died Monday while playing golf. He was 69.

He was born in Lynden, Wash. He and his wife had lived in Jamestown since 1992. He was a retired U.S. Marine with more than 20 years of service. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam with the 8th Engineer Battalion and Seabees, earning a Bronze Star and the Navy Commendation Medal. He was a civil engineer surveyor for Forkert Engineering. He earned a bachelor's degree from University of California, Berkeley, an associate's degree in accounting and various engineering certificates.

His family said his primary passion was his second family and that he loved taking Tyler and Beth to various sports activities. He loved helping with homework and flowers, his family said.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Hibbs of Jamestown; children, Michael and Jeri Hibbs, and Beth and Tyler Brown Hibbs; stepchildren, Brooke and Drake Thais; a sister, Paula Carter of Green River, Wyo.; brothers, Joe Hibbs of Mc Gill, Nev., and Jim Hibbs of Santa Rosa; and aunts, uncles, cousins and numerous friends.

A memorial service is scheduled for 6 tonight at Mountain Springs Golf Club. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made payable to Dana Lang for Beth and Tyler Hibbs, 10599 Jim Brady Road, Jamestown, CA 95327. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Opal ‘Lucile' Whitman

Oct. 13, 1914 — July 16, 2003

Longtime resident of Sonora Opal "Lucile" Whitman died Wednesday at a Sonora nursing home. She was 88.

She was born in McClave, Colo. She lived in Sonora for 27 years. She was a homemaker for 60 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sonora. She taught Sunday school and played the organ for the church.

Mrs. Whitman is survived by her sons, John Whitman and wife, Tiny, of Sonora, Jim Whitman and wife, Betty, of Aptos; a daughter, Jeanne Whitman of Sonora; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James, in 1974, two brothers and two sisters.

Services will be held at a later date. Donations can be made to First Baptist Church of Sonora, for the worship and music ministry fund, 14425 Highway 108, Sonora, CA 95370. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Walter ‘Wally' Carl Baumann

Dec. 12, 1951 — July 12, 2003

Walter "Wally" Carl Baumann of Twain Harte died unexpectedly Saturday at a Sonora hospital. He was 51.

He was born in Downey. He had lived in Twain Harte for 18 years, since 1985. He was a graduate of Torrance High School. Mr. Baumann, an Army veteran of the Vietnam War, worked as a helicopter crew chief and was shot down twice. He was a mechanic and licensed electrician. He worked on heating and air conditioning.

Mr. Baumann is survived by his son, Michael Baumann of Torrance; his daughter, April Baumann of Torrance; his father, Raymond Baumann of Twain Harte; three sisters, Nancy Schiffler of Sacramento, Barbara Baumann of Long Beach and Donna Baumann of San Pedro; seven brothers, Raymond Baumann Jr. of San Pedro, Jeffrey Baumann of Sacramento, Allen Baumann of Colorado, Richard Baumann of Torrance, Ronald and Fred Baumann, both of Sacramento, and Donald Baumann of California; three uncles, George Clarke of Texas, Allen Baumann of Jamestown and Walter Baumann of Alpine; two grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Baumann, a sister, Linda Pena, and a brother, Clayton Baumann.

A visitation is scheduled from noon-2 p.m. today at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home. Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. today at the funeral home. A burial will follow at Mountain Shadow Cemetery. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.


NOEL — David Noel, 36, of Sonora died July 9 in a drowning accident in Fresno. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
