Katherine Marie (O’Leary) Holm

Jan. 31, 1911 — July 12, 2012

Former Tuolumne resident Katherine Marie Holm died Thursday at Sonora Regional Medical Center’s long-term care unit. She was 101.

Mrs. Holm was born in Oakland to Irish immigrant parents, Annie (Neville) and Cornelius O’Leary.

She grew up in the Bay Area and worked at a home insurance company in San Francisco for 10 years. In 1938, she moved to Tuolumne and married Hjalmer “Yummie” Holm. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and later St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sonora. She enjoyed gardening and quilting, and worked as a volunteer tax aide for seniors.

Mrs. Holm was preceded in death by her husband in 1973; her sister, Margaret Smith; her brother, Daniel O’Leary, in 1949; and her great-granddaughter Andrea Porter, in 2009.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Shirley and Gary Roberson, of Tuolumne, and Robert and Cindy Holm, of San Diego; grandchildren, Sheree Cox, Janine Stafford, Kerry Williams, Michael Roberson, Christina Cunha, Heidi Shultz and Heather Jessee; 14 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and several generations of nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Foothill Pregnancy Center, 171 N. Washington St., Sonora.

A memorial service was held Friday at St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Modesto.

John A. MacKenzie

Jan. 29, 1924 — July 1, 2012

Sonora resident John A. MacKenzie died July 1 at the Gardens Care Center in Kingman, Ariz. He was 88.

Mr. MacKenzie was born in Oakland to Carrie (Ready) and Robert MacKenzie.

He married Winifred Wetherby on Sept. 5, 1943. They later built a home in the Twain Harte area in the mid-1950s. 

He worked as a union electrician beginning at the age of 25. He was a member of the Gold Prospectors Association of America and the Mohave Prospectors Association.

Mrs. MacKenzie was preceded in death by his wife, Winifred, in 2010.

He is survived by his son, Richard Alan MacKenzie, of Yucca, Ariz.

A private funeral service will be held.

James Leland Payton

July 6, 1949 — July 8, 2012

Sonora resident James Leland Payton died Sunday at Sonora Regional Medical Center. He was 63.

Mr. Payton was born in Chico. He moved to Sonora 12 years ago.

He was an auto mechanic for 30 years. He enjoyed working on Volkswagens and riding sand dunes in his buggy.

Mr. Payton was preceded in death by his parents, U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. John Lee Payton and Barbara (Kemp) Payton. 

He is survived by his brother, John Payton, of Texas; and his sisters, Kandi Angermiller, of Sonora, Dana Chapman, of Orlando, Fla., and Jana Payton, of Anniston, Ala.

No services are planned.

Michael J. ‘Mike’ Polzoni Jr.

Aug. 24, 1921 — July 9, 2012

Sonora resident Michael J. “Mike” Polzoni Jr. died July 9 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. He was 90. 

Mr. Polzoni was born in South San Francisco. He lived in Tracy until 2002 when he moved to Sonora to be closer to family.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked as a logistics manager for the Tracy Defense Depot for 26 years until his retirement in 1976. He enjoyed watching sports of all kinds, fishing, home repair and decorating the house for the holidays with his wife, Mildred Polzoni.

Mr. Polzoni was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Mildred, in 1997; his brothers, Robert Polzoni, in 2008, Johnny Polzoni, in 1997; and Aniblo Polzoni, in 1984.

He is survived by his children, Douglas Polzoni, of Murphys, and Linda Polzoni, of San Diego; his grandchildren, Rachel Polzoni, of Soulsbyville, Liana Reich, of Sonora, John Sowell Jr., of Oregon, Lisa Nickel, of Lodi, Alisa Braia, of Sonora, and Tina Mitiguy, of Mountain View; and six great-grandchildren.

No services will be held.

Jack Donald Peter

June 20, 1937 — July 3, 2012

Twain Harte resident Jack Donald Peter died July 3 at Avalon Care Center of Sonora. He was 75.

Mr. Peter was born in Flint, Mich., and raised on a farm in Davison, Mich.

He served in the U.S. Army in the early 1960s. He worked as a carpenter in residential construction for 55 years. He moved to Twain Harte and built his own cabin 20 years ago.

He is survived by his sisters, Marylou Gomer, of Azusa, and Jean LaMoureaux, of Davison, Mich.

No services will be held.

BROCKMAN — Joyce Brockman, 83, of Sonora, died Thursday at Sonora Regional Medical Center. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
