Richard ‘Dick’ Duane Donovan April 16, 1931 — June 21, 2011 Sonora resident Richard “Dick” Duane Donovan died June 21 at Kaiser Hospital in Vacaville. He was 80. Born in Emmetsburg, Iowa, he attended high school and junior college there, where he played football, basketball and baseball. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was stationed on the USS Oriskany Aircraft Carrier and was awarded a Bronze Star for pulling a pilot out of a burning plane that exploded upon landing. He married Mary Louise Hernandez in 1954, the couple had five sons. He was a firefighter in Hayward for 30 years. He later went on to sell real estate in Fremont and then in Sonora after he moved there in 1984. He enjoyed fishing, golf, bowling and spending time with his family and friends. Mr. Donovan is survived by his sons, Ric Donovan, of Newbury Park, Dan Donovan, of Sonora, Larry Donovan, of Texas, Scott Donovan, of El Paso, Texas, and Dave Donovan, of Vacaville; grandchildren, JoJo and Matt Donovan, both of Oregon, Kelly and Logan Donovan, both of Jamestown, Maeve Carey, of Miami, Fla., Caitlin and Molly, both of Sonora, and Emily and Devin Donovan, both of Vacaville. He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Mary Louise Donovan. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. July 16 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sonora.
