Bertha Lucille (Miller) Lewis

March 2, 1922 — Dec. 30, 2013

Longtime Twain Harte resident Bertha Lucille “Bertie” (Miller) Lewis died Dec. 30 at Avalon Care Center. She was 91. 

Mrs. Lewis was born in Oakland and grew up in Stockton. She married Bernard Pierce in 1941. He died in active duty in the U.S. military in 1943. She returned to Stockton with her daughter, Carol. 

In 1945, she married Jim Lewis, and they had a daughter, Judy, and a son, Jim, in Stockton. She worked as a switchboard operator. They lived in Stockton until 1967, when Jim’s job with the civil service took them to Guam, Texas, Pennsylvania and Alaska. They retired and moved to Twain Harte in 1983. Mrs. Lewis volunteered at Sonora Community Hospital for many years.

Mrs. Lewis was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, James A. “Jim” Lewis, in 1992.

Mrs. Lewis is survived by children and their spouses, Carol and Ed Sweeney, of Bakersfield, Judy and George Farrell, of Jamestown, and James S. “Jim” and Nancy Lewis, of Sonora; grandchildren, Jennifer Farrell, of Lodi, Nicole Hendrix, of Modesto and James Eric Lewis, of Camp Pendleton; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today at Parkview Cemetery in Manteca.

A donation in her name may be made to a favorite charity.

Edward Melvin Minium

Jan. 29, 1922 — Dec. 29, 2013

Longtime Sonora resident Edward Melvin Minium died Dec. 29 at Avalon Care Center. He was 91.

Mr. Minium was born in Colorado Springs, Colo. and attended the University of Southern California, where he studied chemical engineering. 

He then worked for Southern California Gas Co., Technicolor, Hughes Aircraft, Litton Industries and several startup companies in the Silicon Valley in the 1960s and 1970s. He lived in Sonora for 27 years.

In 1990, he was the Tuolumne County Field Operations Supervisor, and later worked at Sonora’s Walmart when it first opened. 

He organized the local volunteers in the 1990 U.S. Census in Tuolumne County. He was on the Sunnyvale City planning commission and city council. He was a co-founder and board president of the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Department’s Community Service Unit for more than 20 years. 

Mr. Minium was the economic development director for the Tuolumne County Chamber of Commerce and was a volunteer with SCORE, the Service Corps of Retired Executives. He served on boards of many other organizations and committees. 

Mr. Minium was preceded in death by his father, Melvin Edward Minium, in 1940; and his mother, Winifred Van Horn Minium, in 1982.

He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Leslie Dianne Miller Minium, of Sonora; his children, Candice Weber, of Calabasas, Craig Minium, of Reno, Nev., Scott Minium, of Los Angeles, and Robin DeBord, of Blacksburg, Va.; stepchildren, Laurie White, of Las Vegas, Lawrence Longenecker Jr., of San Clemente, and Larissa Goodall, Lake Elsinore; grandchildren, Jessica Prunk, Kelly Minium, Katie Minium, Stacey Bloomer, Michael Minium, Cathryn Minium and Emily DeBord; and eight great-grandchildren. 

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Jan. 18 at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home in Sonora.

James W. Oliver Sr.

Dec. 22, 1946 — Dec. 27, 2013

Tuolumne resident James W. Oliver Sr. died Dec. 27 at a Modesto hospital. He was 67.

Mr. Oliver was born in Modesto to the late Clyde and Dorothy Oliver. He grew up in Hilmar and, after graduating from Hilmar High School, attended Modesto Junior College, where he earned an associate of arts degree.

Mr. Oliver married Bobbie Oliver, of Turlock, in 1967 and moved to San Jose to work for Hewlett Packard. He then made plans with his father to open Sierra Building Supply in Soulsbyville. He ran the business until it closed in 2000. In retirement, Mr. Oliver enjoyed hosting family events, playing with his grandchildren and exploring the topics of gravity and magnetism.

Mr. Oliver is survived by his wife, Bobbie Oliver; his children and their spouses, James W. Oliver Jr. and Shelli Oliver, Jason and Trisha Oliver, and Shannon and Andrew Freitas; grandchildren, Amanda, Tyler, Rylee, and LeAnna Oliver, Mason Carlen, Esten, Jack and Catherine Freitas; his sisters and brother-in-law, Jayne and Wayne Van Gaalen and Sharon Oliver Boswell; three nieces; and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Dorothy Oliver in 1988; his father-in-law, Esten Covey, in 2003; and his niece, Lisa Van Gaalen Peacock, in 2013.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Turlock Memorial Park. 

Allen Mortuary of Turlock is handling arrangements.
