William ‘Riley’ Boyd

June 11, 1956 — Jan. 20, 2014

Avery resident William “Riley” Boyd died Jan. 20 at his home. He was 57.

Mr. Boyd was born in Modesto, the son of Opal and James Boyd.

He worked for Arnold Tool Rental for 8 years. Mr. Boyd was also a commercial fisherman and concrete cutter. 

He enjoyed rebuilding hot rod engines and was a fan of the Oakland Raiders.

Mr. Boyd was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy Boyd, of Avery; his stepchildren and their spouses, Charles and Denise Johnson, of Oakdale, Sheila Engleman and Randy Sanchez, of Arnold, and Amanda Aiken, of Avery; grandchildren, Nicole Willyard, Sarah Willyard, Michael Johnson, Kourtni Johnson, Hannah Aiken, R.J. Sanchez and Bailey Johnson; and two great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Mountain Christian Fellowship Church in Murphys. A potluck will follow. 

Angels Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

Cecil Smedsvig Malmin

Oct. 8, 1917 — Jan. 22, 2014

Angels Camp resident Cecil Smedsvig Malmin died Jan. 22 in San Andreas. He was 96.

Mr. Malmin was born in Astoria, Ore., but grew up in Alameda. His parents were divorced when he was a young child and his father returned to his native Norway. His mother, also from Norway, had trouble supporting her two sons, his family said

Mr. Malmin arranged for himself and his brother to move into the San Francisco Protestant Orphanage.

Malmin left the orphanage in 1932. He and his brother went to Norway to live with relatives.

He joined the U.S. Navy in 1937 as an airplane mechanic. He was injured at Pearl Harbor and received two Purple Hearts during his service, which lasted 20 years. 

He met his wife, Dorothy, at the Mare Island Naval Hospital, where she was a nurse. They were engaged after five days.

After leaving the Navy, he worked for NASA in Mountain View, where he did instrument training and flight simulation. He retired from NASA and moved to Angels Camp several years ago to be near his children. 

He was a member of the Purple Heart Association, Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 2600 and Sons of Norway. He served as state secretary of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and secretary of the local Shiners chapter. 

Mr. Malmin was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Malmin. 

He is survived by his son, Tor Malmin, of Angels Camp; daughter, Anna Lloyd, of Grass Valley, four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

No services will be held.

Angels Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements. 

Dennis Lee Sullivan Jr.

Nov. 15, 1951 — Jan. 16, 2014

Jamestown resident Dennis Lee Sullivan Jr. died Jan. 16 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. He was 62.

Mr. Sullivan was born in Oakland, the son Brenda Juanita (Alexander) and Dennis L. Sullivan Sr.

He worked as a welder and fabricator in Jamestown for 11 years.

He settled in Jamestown 13 years ago.

Mr. Sullivan enjoyed fishing, rebuilding guns and taking care of his three dogs.

Mr. Sullivan was preceded in death by parents.

He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Debbie D. Sullivan, of Jamestown; his daughter, Tonia Love, of Twain Harte; his stepchildren, Dena Schuerenberg, of Lutz, Fla., and Nathan Knight, of Modesto; his grandchildren, Camey Love, Cody Love, Jazmyne Menk, Tre’ Cash, Connor Conlon, Logan Schuerenberg and Jena Knight; three great-grandchildren, and siblings, Sherry Yarbough and Brenda Miller.

A celebration of life potluck will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Willow Steakhouse in Jamestown.

BARNETT — Della Barnett, 95, of Sonora, died Tuesday at Avalon Care Center. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements. 

GAIER — Teresa “Kim” Gaier, 86, of Sonora, died Friday at Sonora Regional Medical Center. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements. 

KUMETAT — Donald Kumetat, 56, of Twain Harte, died Tuesday at his home. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
