Arthur J. ‘Art’ Sloper

Feb. 4, 1927 — Dec. 21, 2013

Longtime Tuolumne County resident Arthur J. “Art” Sloper died Dec. 21 at Avalon Care Center. He was 86.

Mr. Sloper was born in San Francisco.

After his initial training in radio broadcast, he entered into the field of television as a broadcast technician, and worked at KPIX-Westinghouse for 30 years. He retired in 1987 and moved to Mi-Wuk Village.

While raising a family of five children, Mr. Sloper participated as a scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts in San Francisco. He was active in Freemasonry and related fraternal orders. Mr. and Mrs. Sloper enjoyed square dancing for many years. 

In retirement, he enjoyed volunteering. He was a volunteer fireman for many years in the Mi-Wuk-Sugar Pine Fire Protection District, helped at the Community Services Unit of the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Department, and was active in the Mi-Wuk Homeowners Association. 

He also was a member of the Tuolumne County Amateur Radio Club, and a member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Eleanore Sloper, of Jamestown; children and their spouses, Karen Holdstock, Miko Sloper, John Sloper, Trudy Hudson and Chela and Pam Sloper; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, 24176 Pine Lake Drive, Sugar Pine.

A donation in his name may be made to Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 280, Mi-Wuk Village, CA 95346.

The Neptune Society of Central California handled arrangements.

Larry Joseph ‘Fish’ Fresquez

Dec. 6, 1955 — Dec. 28, 2013

Groveland resident Larry Joseph “Fish” Fresquez died Dec. 28 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. He was 58.

Mr. Fresquez was born at Mission San Jose. He lived in Groveland for 42 years. 

He worked for the U.S. Forest Service in Groveland for 42 years, guarding the forest, fighting fires and caring for the animals, according to his family. 

He supported youth football in Manteca and was an Oakland Raider’s football fan. He also loved to travel and enjoyed the forest.

He is survived by his wife of five years, Nancy Perry, of Groveland; his son and daughter-in-law, Jamie and Leigha Perry; grandchildren, Shane Perry, Tyler Perry, Sarah Perry and A.J. Perry; siblings, Linda Fresquez and Rose and her husband Frank Vasquez.

He was preceded in death by parents Elsiciro and Alicia Fresquez; and his brother, Elsiciro Fresquez.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home. 

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Oak Grove Cemetery in Groveland.

Carol Raye Williams

March 27, 1943 — Dec. 27, 2013 

Jamestown resident Carol Raye Williams died Dec. 27 at her home. She was 70.

Mrs. Williams was born in Vallejo, the daughter of Verna Rossi and Carroll Erhardt. 

She was married to Burle Rodgers and they had a son, David, and a daughter, Lora. They later divorced and she married Tom Williams 26 years ago.

Mrs. Williams worked at the Beauty Spot and then Lasting Impressions, where she retired from hair dressing. Many of her clients became longtime friends.

Among her many interests were reading local news, embroidery, watching old movies and going to the casino. She enjoyed her home and gardening. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband Tom Williams, of Jamestown; children and their spouses, David and Aida Rodgers, of Sonora, Lora and Carl Canida, of Sonora; grandchildren, Hannah and Sarah Rodgers, of Modesto, and Coltin, Daltin and Audrey Canida, of Sonora; siblings, Sandy Stalcup, of Woodland, Jennie Madlem, of Mountain View, Doug Erhardt and his wife, Debbie, of Marysville, and Linda Erhardt, of South Carolina; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A donation in her name may be made to a favorite charity.

A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Jan. 11 at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home.

GRINSTEAD — Marsha Grinstead, 61, of Sonora, died Wednesday at her home. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements. 

PETERSEN — Shirley Petersen, 87, of Sonora, died Wednesday at her home. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
