Valley Springs resident Joe Glass died Jan. 15 in San Andreas. He was 71.
Mr. Glass was born in Louisville, Miss., the son of Stella (Rash) and Zeb Glass.
He graduated high school in the early 1960s.
He traveled by train to California to make a better life for himself.
He married Mary Glass in Redwood City in 1963.
Mr. Glass worked as a custodian for the Oak Grove school district for more than 30 years before retiring in 2008.
He was a member of horse riding groups including the Brotherhood Riders of Stockton and the Black Cowboys Association.
He enjoyed fishing, camping, riding horses, dancing and blues music.
Mr. Glass was preceded in death by parents.
He is survived by his companion, Barbara Young, of Valley Springs; his estranged wife, Mary Glass, of Santa Clara; his children, Steve Glass, of Santa Clara, Alissa Morelan, of Santa Clara, grandchildren, Alex, Vanessa and Gaby Morelan, of Campbell, and Bella and Tony Glass, of Santa Clara; and his siblings, Ken Glass, of Palo Alto, Zeb Glass, of Phoenix, Ariz., Lamar Glass, of Palo Alto, Gladys Moorer, of Menlo Park, and Zettie Lee Shields, of Louisville, Miss.
A memorial service will be held in Santa Clara in March.

Emily (Stone) Graves

Murphys resident Emily (Stone) Graves died Jan. 19 at her home. She was 61.
Mrs. Graves was born in Redwood City, to James and Marguerite Stone. She grew up in Northern California with her parents and seven siblings.
She began riding horses at a young age. She was skilled in English riding, dressage, and jumping. She taught children and adults to ride.
She graduated from Baker College in 1999 with an associate’s degree in business.
Mrs. Graves lived most of her adult life in Michigan and spent a few years in Missouri. She returned California two years ago and settled in Murphys.
She attended Foothill Community Church.
Mrs. Graves was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Midge, Jimmy and John Stone.
She is survived by her husband, Dennis Graves, of Murphys; children, David Stone, of Port Huron, Mich., and Kristi Stone, of Ann Arbor, Mich.; stepchildren, Jennifer McClelland, of Port Huron, Daniel Graves, of Birmingham, Mich., and Denise Willbanks, of Brant, Mich; 12 grandchildren, including Eli Willbanks, of Brant; siblings, Carl Stone, of Redding, Billie Stone, of Aurora, Mo., Janet Stone, of Glenn Heights, Texas, and Frank Stone, of Dorrington; and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday Altaville Protestant Cemetery in Angels Camp.

HARRIS — Daniel Harris, 68, of Sonora, died Sunday at his home. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
SULLIVAN — A celebration of potluck for Dennis Lee Sullivan Jr., 62, of Jamestown, who died Jan. 16 at Sonora Regional Medical Center, will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Willow Steakhouse in Jamestown. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
