John Edwin Gray

Former Sonora resident John Edwin Gray died Jan. 18 at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto. He was 65.
Mr. Gray was born in Oakland to John and Maryann Gray. He was raised in Sonora.
He was a 1964 graduate of Sonora High School and graduated from the University of California, Davis, in 1969, majoring in plant science. He spent his career as a landscape contractor in Sacramento, Davis and Modesto.
Mr. Gray enjoyed traveling to Scotland to experience the people, gardens, golf and fishing.
Mr. Gray was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by sons, Jedediah Gray, of Washington, D.C., and Zackary Gray, of Manteca; a daughter, Isabel Gray, of Manteca; sister, Janice Moon, of San Andreas; former wives, Sue Gray, of Davis, Anne Lincoln, of Davis, and Rebecca Gray, of Ceres; and a cousin.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Feb. 6 at Modesto Garden Club, 622 14th St., and 1 p.m. Feb. 15 at the Episcopal Church of St. Martin, 620 Hawthorne St., Davis.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Friends of the UC Davis Arboretum, One Shields Ave., Davis CA 95616; or the National Trust for Scotland, 28 Charlotte Square Wemyss House, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK, EH24ET.

James Marvin Hunn

Former Murphys resident James Marvin Hunn died Jan. 13 in Concord. He was 62.
Mr. Hunn was born in Martinez in Contra Costa County and lived in Murphys for a number of years before returning to Contra Costa 22 years ago.
Mr. Gray was preceded in death by his parents, Stan and Leona Hunn.
He is survived by a brother, Larry Hunn and sister-in-law Marilyn Hunn, of Murphys; daughters, Jennifer, Amber, Erin, and Natasha; a nephew, Eric Hunn, of Pasadena; and niece, Julie Hunn, of Grass Valley; and four grandchildren.
No services are planned at this time.

Sept. 17, 1937 — Jan. 7, 2013
Sonora resident Erika Stelling died Jan. 7 in Towaco, N.J., at the home of her daughter. She was 75.
Mrs. Stelling was born in Kaldenkirchen, Germany, and came to the United States when she was 20 years old.
She married Henry Stelling in November of 1959. They lived in Saratoga for more than 30 years, then decided to retire in a rural setting and moved to Sonora in 1991.
She did volunteer work in her community while raising their three children. She and her husband traveled throughout the United States, Europe, Africa, New Zealand and Australia.
She was a member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Sonora and an officer of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Cedar Ridge Volunteer Fire Company.
She enjoyed playing tennis and cards.
Mrs. Stelling is survived by her husband, Henry Stelling, of Sonora; sister, Lilo Rameckers, of Germany; brother, Karl Heinz Noack, of Germany; her children and their spouses, Carl and Karen Stelling, of Coto de Caza, Orange County, Cindy and Wayne Spaulding, of Frisco, Colo., and Lilo and Erik Kolmodin, of Towaco, N.J.; and eight grandchildren, Matthew Spaulding, of Los Angeles, Jeffrey, Nicholas and Gregory Spaulding, of Frisco, Colo., Mia and Drew Stelling, of Coto de Caza, and Hunter Kolmodin and Mats Kolmodin, of Towaco.
Private interment was held at Cypress Lawn Cemetery in Colma.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
