Arleen Joyce (Nissen) Cook

Nov. 4, 1943 — Jan. 18, 2014

Arnold resident Arleen Joyce (Nissen) Cook died Jan. 18 at her home after a 28-year battle with Parkinson’s disease. She was 70.

Mrs. Cook was born in Montebello, Los Angeles County, the daughter of Margaret and Willard Nissen. Her father did not see her until 1945, upon his return from service in the U.S. Army.

She lived in Avenal and Madera for a short time as a child until her parents moved to Coalinga. She graduated from Coalinga High School in 1961 and attended West Hills College.

She married George E. Cook, also of Coalinga, in July 1963 and raised two children, George Jr., born in 1964, and Jill, born in 1973.

They moved to Fresno in 1967. Mrs. Cook worked as an accountant while her husband attended California State University, Fresno.

Her husband worked as a California State Park Ranger and his career took them to Humboldt Redwoods State Park in Weott, Millerton Lake near Fresno, Cuyamaca Rancho in San Diego County, Hearst Castle near Cambria, and Big Basin State Park in Santa Cruz County.

They also spent seven years in Empire Mine State Historic Park in Grass Valley, the park she enjoyed most.

They moved to Arnold in 1999.

Mrs. Cook was a teacher’s aide in Grass Valley at Union Hill Elementary School but was primarily a homemaker.

She was an artist and enjoyed acrylic painting. She collected antique glass and marbles. 

She also was a pastry cook and enjoyed entertaining and family gatherings.

Mrs. Cook was preceded in death by her mother.

She is survived by her husband, George Cook, of Arnold; her children, George Cook Jr., of San Jose, and Jill Cook, of Arnold; granddaughters, Angela Graham-Cook and Dannielle Arleen Hill, of Arnold; her father, Willard Nissen, of Visalia; sister, Carol Brown, of Visalia; and her brother, Robert Nissen, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; six nieces and two nephews.    

Donations in her memory can be made to Hospice of the Sierra, 20100 Cedar Road North, Sonora, CA 95370.

A graveside was held at Buena Vista Cemetery in Murphys.

Angels Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements. 

Anita L. Rogers

Dec. 24, 1934 — Jan. 1, 2014

Sugar Pine resident Anita L. Rogers died Jan. 1 at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. She was 79.

Mrs. Rogers was born in East Bernard, Texas, the daughter of Ilona and Harold Stackhouse.

She married James W. Rogers in Salinas in 1951.

Mrs. Rogers lived most of her life in Salinas before moving to Mi-Wuk Village in 1989 after her husband’s retirement. They moved to Sugar Pine 10 years ago.

She enjoyed camping, fishing and RVing with her husband, and visiting Black Oak Casino.

Mrs. Rogers was preceded in death by her father, Harold Stackhouse; her mother, Ilona Jackson; her husband of 60 years, James W. Rogers; and daughter, Kim Rogers Petri. 

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Rodney and Joan Rogers, of Hollister; son-in-law John Petri, of Salinas; four grandchildren and their spouses, Anthony and Kansas Petri, Kati Petri-Brumage and Matthew Brumage, Chase Rogers and Ashley Rogers; three great-grandchildren; and sister, Audrey Wurmest, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

No services are planned.

Lottie Mae Mallory

May 24, 1917 — Jan. 14, 2014

Soulsbyville resident Lottie Mae Mallory died Jan. 14 at Oak Terrace Memory Care. She was 96.

Mrs. Mallory was born in Fauquier County, Va., the daughter of Nettie Downs. She was raised by Charles and Lou Jefferies.

She married John Mallory in 1938. They moved to California in 1947 and lived in Hughson and Merced before moving to Green Valley, Ariz., to 1977.

Mrs. Mallory moved to Tuolumne County in 1990.

She enjoyed senior activities including exercise classes, travelling with senior groups, playing cards, bingo and attending luncheons and dinners.

She was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary for more than 30 years. 

Mrs. Mallory was preceded in death by her husband, John Mallory, in 1985; her mother, Nettie (Downs) Hancock, in 1990; brother, Percy Benton, in 2002; sister, Anne Marie Corbin; and Charles and Lou Jefferies.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Charles and Jean Mallory, of Sonora, Jonni and Steve Agnello, of Greensburg, Pa.; sister, Rosa Lee Clegg, of Alexandria, Va.; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, James and Evelyn Mallory, of Culpepper, Va.; grandchildren, Gretchen Angello, of Greensburg, Heather and Cam Atkins, of Littlestown, Pa., and Steve and Denelle Agnello, of Indiana, Pa., and four great-grandchildren.

JULIAN — Robert “Bob” Julian, 74, of Jamestown, died Wednesday at his home. A vigil will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home, 225 E. Rose St., Sonora. A mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 127 W. Jackson St., Sonora. Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery in Sonora. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
