Mary Penelope ‘Penny’             (Plants) Bird

Dec. 21, 1948 — Jan. 6, 2014

Former Sonora resident Mary Penelope “Penny” (Plants) Bird died Jan. 6 in Elk Grove. She was 65.

Mrs. Bird was born and raised in Sonora, the daughter of James and Luella Plants. 

She attended Sonora High School and was a member of the first class to graduate from Columbia College. She completed her degree in sociology at California State University, Humboldt. 

She married Calvin C. Bird on Nov. 25, 1968, in Reno, Nev.

Mrs. Bird owned Thunderbird Services for about 10 years, until 2005. The company contracted with the U.S. Forest Service to do fire prevention work, including clearing overgrown forest.

She moved to Elk Grove six years ago.

She enjoyed reading and sewing.

Mrs. Bird was preceded in death by parents; and two older brothers, James and Bill Plants.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Calvin C. Bird, of Thailand; her children, Joshua C. Bird, of Gresham, Ore., Samantha P. Bird, of Honeydew, Breanna C. Garcia, of Elk Grove, Heather K. Bird, of Auburn, Amanda M. Agabao, of Dixon, Autumn Bird, of Folsom, Christopher G. Bird, of Thailand, Michael J. Bird, of Elk Grove, Susannah K. Bird-Thompson, of Japan, and Cheyenne S. Bird, of Elk Grove; 10 grandchildren, Nathan Parker, Delilah Agabao, Isabella Garcia, Kristin Parker, Maile Agabao, Nicky Bird, Penny Thompson, Gabriel Garcia, Jackson Parker and Piper Bird; and her siblings, Virginia Day, Debbie Ortega and Joyce Walsh. 

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Mountain Shadow Cemetery, Lyons Bald Mountain Road, Sonora. 

Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements. 

George Alfred Coe Jr.

Feb. 18, 1951 — Dec. 27, 2013

Sonora resident George Alfred Coe Jr. died Dec. 27, 2013, at his home after a long battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He was 62.

Mr. Coe was born in Syracuse, N.Y., the son of George Coe Sr. and Ida Coe.

He was a lifelong member of the Boy Scouts of America and earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 1967 at age 16.

Mr. Coe enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve in 1969. He trained as an administrative specialist and small-arms marksman. 

He was honorably discharged from the reserve in 1976.

Mr. Coe grew up in Virginia and lived in Japan during his teenage years because of his father’s military career. He later moved to Riverside, in Southern California, in 1972. 

While still a reservist, he took a job as an assistant operations officer at Bank of America.

He was hired by Grantree Furniture in Sacramento as a manager in 1976, and in 1995 he took a job at Pacific Bell.

Throughout his employment, he stayed active in the Boy Scouts. He started volunteering as a Cub Master in 1988. Two years later took on the role of Scout Master.

Mr. Coe was awarded the silver bear, a district award of merit awarded for exemplary volunteerism and help on an administrative level, in 1997.

He was hired as a paraprofessional responsible for forming new Boy Scout units in the Sacramento area in 1998. In the same year, he also completed Boy Scout Wood Badge training, the highest level of training an adult leader can attain.

Mr. Coe worked for Boy Scouts of America for several years before taking a job as a long-haul truck driver.

He moved to Sonora in 2009 after the death of his father, George Coe Sr.

Mr. Coe was preceded in death by his parents; and son, Galen Coe. 

He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Debra Coe, of Olivehurst; and his children, Ian Coe, of Roseville, and Shannon Farish and her husband, Lance, of Centerton, Ark. 

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church of Roseville.
