Marjorie ‘Midge’ Jordan

May 4, 1920 — Jan. 3, 2013

Marjorie “Midge” Jordan, of Murphys, died Jan. 3, at Mark Twain Medical Center in San Andreas. She was 92.

Mrs. Jordan was born in England, the only daughter of Sam and Harriet Wilson Dakin, who also had four sons.

She moved to Calaveras County by way of the Bay Area 15 years ago.

She was 19 when World War II began in England, and the war lasted until she was 25. During those years, she worked as a nurse for children whose parents served in the war.

She met her future husband, Darrell Jordan, during the war.

At the war’s end, she was among the first to board a passenger plane out of England. She landed in San Francisco on July 4, 1946. The couple wed two weeks later, on July 20. She gave birth to twins, Greg and Karen, on July 20, 1947.

While living in the Bay Area, she enjoyed taking Sunday drives from San Lorenzo to Murphys, where she would eventually settle.

She was known for her red hair and matching lipstick, her family said.

Mrs. Jordan enjoyed gardening, reading, golf, playing cards, camping in the Sierra Nevada and traveling. Her favorite destination was the family cabin at Lake Tahoe.  As a young girl, she enjoyed walks through Whitwell Wood in England with her father.  Other interests included dogs and playing Trivial Pursuit.  She enjoyed studying the history of the California Missions, the West and Native Americans. However, she maintained her love for English tea.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her four brothers.

Mrs. Jordan is survived by her children and their spouses, Greg and Nuala Jordan, of Angels Camp, and Karen and Carl Smith, of Murphys; her grandchildren and their spouses, Jeff and Adriana Smith, of Folsom, Kristi and Jeff Ellis, of San Diego, Heather and Jon Pratt, of Gilroy, Erin and Brendan O’Donnell, of Sacramento; and nine great-grandchildren.

Her family also said she was very religious.

Donations in her memory can be made to Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation, 768 Mountain Ranch Road, San Andreas, CA 95249.

A private memorial service has been held.

Angels Memorial Chapel handled arrangements.
