Alice Marie (Hinkley) Larson

Sonora resident Alice Marie (Hinkley)Larson died Tuesday at Avalon Care Center after a long illness. She was 75.
Mrs. Larson was born in Sunnyvale, the daughter of George and Thirza Hinkley.
She graduated from Fremont High School in Sunnyvale in 1955. She later graduated from business school in San Jose and worked as an executive assistant for Lockheed Martin.
She married Eugene Larson in 1964 and they moved their family from Fremont to Sonora in 1976.
Mrs. Larson volunteered at her children’s schools in the late 1970s and then worked for several years as a bookkeeper for the Zelinsky Painting Co. and the Lazy Z Resort in Twain Harte.
She enjoyed family camping trips in the Sierra Nevada, square dancing with the Twain Harte Twirlers and was active in supporting youth sports for her children.
Mrs. Larson was active in bowling and participated in several Sonora leagues for almost three decades. She served as secretary of the Sonora Bowling Association for almost as many years.
Mrs. Larson was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Larson; and parents, George and Thirza Hinkley.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, John and Shelley Larson, of El Dorado Hills, Julie Larson, of San Juan Capistrano, and Jeffrey Larson and Renee Pena, of Sonora; and eight grandchildren, Jillian Larson, Julie Larson, Justyne Larson, Jacob Williams, Kira Basciano, Jennifer Larson, Nicole Pflager and Luke Larson.
Viewing will be held from 8:30 to 10 a.m. on Saturday at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home, 225 E. Rose St., Sonora. A memorial service will immediately follow.
A celebration of life will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Veterans Memorial Hall and Military Museum in downtown Sonora.

Otis J. Preston
May 19, 1930 — Jan. 4, 2014
Altaville resident Otis J. Preston died Jan. 4 at Mark Twain Convalescent Hospital in San Andreas after a long battle with cancer. He was 83.
Mr. Preston was born Berkeley, the son of Ethel A. (Stumpff) and Otis J. Preston III.
He was the oldest of five children and the only son.
He attended college before joining the U.S. Army in 1948. He received basic training at Fort Ord before being shipped overseas to the Japanese occupation force. He was stationed in Okinawa at Kadena Air Base on an anti-aircraft battery guarding the B-29s during the Korean War.
He was transferred back to the United States after three years and was stationed at the Presidio. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant in 1952.
Mr. Preston worked in the lithography trade as an ink chemist for some of the largest printing companies on the West Coast. He supplied ink and matching colors on the press run for 30 years throughout the Bay Area.
He and his wife, Helen, moved to her hometown of Altaville in 1978.
He worked California Electric Steel until his retirement in the early 1990s. He was given a commemorative plaque upon his retirement.
Mr. Preston was an enthusiast of Indian motorcycles and lifelong rider. He also was knowledgeable about antique automobiles.
Mr. Preston was preceded in death by his wife, Helen (Crosby) Preston, in 2013; his parents; sisters, Beverly Adamson and Dolores Preston; and stepdaughter, Darla (Korbelik) Osborn.
He is survived by his children and their spouses, Michael and Barbara Preston, of Murphys, and Nora and Dave Ernst, of Flagstaff, Ariz.; stepchildren and their spouses, Gary and Patty Korbelik, of Arnold, and and Linda (Korbelik) and Lee Cross, of Vallecito; sisters, Marilyn Martinez, of San Fernando, and Barbara Kaufman, of San Jose; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Donations in his memory can be made to Mark Twain Convalescent Hospital, in care of Mark Twain Hospital Foundation, 768 Mountain Ranch Road, San Andreas, CA 95249.
A memorial service officiated by the Rev. Rolly Petronio will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Angels Memorial Chapel, 1071 S. Main St., Angels Camp.
