Kenneth R. Compton
Feb. 21, 1933 — Feb. 16, 2013
Former Sonora resident Kenneth Compton died Feb. 16 at his home in Medford, Ore. He was 79.
Mr. Compton was born in Dallas, Texas, to Lorene and Robert Compton. After becoming an ordained minister, he served as director of youth activities in Oklahoma and later became the president of the Christian Churches of Northern California and Nevada. His office was in Berkeley.
He then worked as an administrator for several continuing care communities in California.
He retired to Sonora in 1998 and continued serving as interim administrator and consultant for many retirement facilities and served on many advisory boards in California, including one for Tuolumne General Hospital, in Sonora.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and son, Gregory Todd Compton, in 1984.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Eleanor “Ellie” Compton, of Medford; children, Jeff and wife Sherri Compton, of El Dorado Hills, Jann Barrett, of Prescott, Ariz., and Kay Lynn and husband, Jeff Cavalier, of Medford; grandchildren, Todd Barrett, of Prescott Valley, Ariz., Ryan Harrison, of Chico, Justin and Jennifer Cavalier, of Medford, Tyler Barrett, of Tucson, Ariz., Austin Barrett, of Prescott, and Cole Compton, of El Dorado Hills; brother, Jerry, and wife, Edy Compton, of Lafayette; a niece and a nephew.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. March 10 at Arden Christian Church, 4300 Las Cruces Way, Sacramento.

John Edward Ramirez
Jan. 27, 1959 — Feb. 15, 2013
Copperopolis resident John Ramirez died Feb. 15 at home. He was 54.
Mr. Ramirez was born in Patterson to Sal and Eva Ramirez. He grew up in Newman and attended Orestimba High School, where he played football and ran track. He graduated in 1978.
He worked as a licensed home inspector in the Central Valley area until his death.
He enjoyed playing golf, taking ocean cruises and hosting gatherings at his home.
Mr. Ramirez was preceded in death by his father in August 2012.
He is survived by wife, Jodie Ramirez, of Copperopolis; mother, Eva Ramirez, of Newman; children, Jared Ramirez, Kori Ramirez, both of Modesto, and Kris and wife Amanda Ramirez, of Oakdale; grandchildren, Janessa Ramirez, of Modesto, Karly Ramirez, of Oakdale, and Axel Ramirez, of Oakdale; siblings and their spouses, Sal and Tari Ramirez, of Patterson, Frank and Kathy Ramirez, of Hilmar, and Theresa and Chuck Brusco, of Modesto; and numerous nephews and nieces.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Historic Copperopolis Armory, 695 Main St.
Angels Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
Bertha Almeda (Bynum) Steely
Oct. 19, 1925 — Feb. 19, 2013
Sonora resident Bertha Steely died Feb. 19 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. She was 87.
Mrs. Steely was born in Wellington, Texas, to Gertrude and Ezra Bynum. She moved with her family to California for work during the Dust Bowl.
She married John R. Steely in 1946 and spent her life as a homemaker in Sonora for 60 years.
She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, crafting, and visits with family and friends.
Mrs. Steely was preceded in death by her husband.
She is survived by children, Sandra Waterman, of San Francisco, John Steely, of Sonora, and Dan Steely, of Fairbanks, Alaska; grandchildren, Wendy Waterman, of San Francisco, Mike Waterman, of Penngrove, Catheryn Ramsey, of Sonora, Heather Serpa, of Sonora, Jake Fear, of San Diego, Megan Morris, of La Mesa, Clint Terrill, of Alaska, and Shannon Valencia, of Boston, Mass.; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Mountain Shadow Cemetery in Sonora.

Jean (LaVere) Self
April 27, 1932 — Feb. 7, 2013
Jean Self, formerly of Sonora and Angels Camp, died Feb. 7 at Golden Living Center in Sanger, in Fresno County. She was 80.
Mrs. Self was born in Selma to Charles and Gladys LaVere.
She married Herb Self in 1951, and spent most of her life as a homemaker. Mr. Self worked for the California Department of Forestry. The couple lived in and moved around the area for his work, living in Sonora for 18 years, and Angels Camp for 10.
She enjoyed houseplants, music and bingo.
Mrs. Self was preceded in death by her husband in 2004.
She is survived by her children, Susan Rhee, of San Andreas, Cindy and her husband Donald Timmons, Jr., of Garden Grove, Donald Self, of Selma, Mike and Kriss Self, both of Nampa, Idaho; grandchildren, Teri Currier, of Garden Grove, Phillip Reiser, of Columbia, Donald Timmons III, of Garden Grove, Holly Self, of Sacramento, and Katie Owensby, of Modesto; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Private services will be held in Selma.
Thomas Robinson Funeral Home in Selma is handling arrangements.
Donations in her memory may be made to a charity of choice.
