Emery Martin Bumgarner

Sonora resident Emery Bumgarner died Feb. 13 at his home. He was 91.
Mr. Bumgarner was born in Janesville, Wis. He was raised there and married Pearl Elaine MacMurtrie before moving to California.
He worked as a residential and commercial carpenter for 60 years, starting in Woodland Hills. He and his wife moved to South Lake Tahoe in the 1960s and he built homes there.
After Pearl died, Mr. Bumgarner moved to Sonora, where he had golfed and worked briefly.
Mr. Bumgarner was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Sonora, Sons in Retirement, Eastbelt Tuolumne Lodge No. 8, Dart Club and Horseshoes Club of Sonora, and Mountain Springs Golf Course.
He enjoyed travel, the outdoors, horses, and custom woodworking.
Mr. Bumgarner was preceded in death by wife of 30 years, Pearl Bumgarner, in 1972.
He is survived by son, Gary Bumgarner, of Minden, Nev.; daughter, Cheryl L. Davis, of Sonora; sister, Bea Hanson, of Janesville; and grandchildren, Lorrie Ollar, of Campbell, Tom Ollar, of Tucson, Ariz., and Randy Ollar, of Sonora; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Donald E. ‘Don’ Cutts
Aug. 4, 1930 — Feb. 13, 2013
Sonora resident Donald Cutts died Feb. 13 at his home. He was 82.
Mr. Cutts was born in Newell, S.D., to Samuel E. and Mary E. Cutts. He graduated from Belle Fourche High School in 1947.
He attended Long Beach City College and California State University, Long Beach, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees, plus three teaching credentials. He taught in the Los Angeles Unified School District from 1960 to 1974.
Mr. Cutts passed the Certified Public Accountant exam in 1971 and worked as a CPA until 1998, including three years as a chief financial officer for the Area 12 Agency on Aging in Sonora.
He retired in 2005, and taught at the Sierra Ridge Academy in San Andreas until his full retirement.
He enjoyed golf, gardening and nature walks.
Mr. Cutts was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Anna Cutts; his three sisters; and one brother.
He is survived by his six children and their spouses, Anna and Bill Malott, of Plattsburgh, N.Y., Mary and Peter Lespier, of Richmond, Michael and Lisa Cutts, of Anaheim, Stephen Cutts, of Sonora, Maureen and Joe Graham, of Sonora, and Elise and Tobias Fredeking, of Modesto; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers, Walter Cutts, of Nebraska, and Samuel Cutts, of Jamestown.
Services have been held.

David William Garrett
July 11, 1937 — Feb. 18, 2013
Camp Connell resident David Garrett died Feb. 18 in Vallecito. He was 75.
Mr. Garrett was born in Omaha, Neb., to Wayne and Bessie LaRue Garrett. He moved his family to California in 1962.
He taught fifth and sixth grades and lived in Fremont for 32 years. He was a football and basketball coach, referee and mentor. He retired to Camp Connell in the mid-90s.
Mr. Garrett is survived by his wife of 55 years, Peggy Garrett, of Camp Connell; his children and their spouses, Brent and Kathy Garrett, of Ceres, Bart Garrett and Rosie Luna, of Oakdale; grandchildren, Rachael Lacass, of Fremont, Joshua, Jared, Jacob, and Ashley Garrett, of Ceres; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Larry LaRue Garrett, of Omaha.
Services will be held at a later date.

LORENZEN — Mary Lorenzen, 84, of Sonora, died Friday at Country Lane Estates in Columbia. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
MARION — Robert Marion, 81, of Soulsbyville, died Monday at Avalon Care Center. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
SMITH — Philip Smith, 73, of Twain Harte, died Sunday at Sonora Regional Medical Center. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
