Jesse Marie (Hight) ‘Jay' Schoenfelder

Dec. 19, 1914 — Feb. 8, 2003

Jesse Marie (Hight) "Jay" Schoenfelder, 88, a former resident of Tuolumne, died Saturday, Feb. 8, at a Sonora hospital.

Mrs. Schoenfelder was born in Spring Canyon, Utah, and had lived in Oakdale for the past 10 years.

She worked at Lockheed during World War II. There, she met many celebrities, including Ann Miller, with whom she sang at Lockheed. She also had many other jobs during her life, including working as a housekeeper at Doctor's Hospital in Modesto for five years and working for a time at Sonora Community Hospital.

Her family said her life was centered around her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and she also enjoyed crocheting afghans.

Mrs. Schoenfelder is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Cherri and Paul Gallant of Sonora, Teddy Jaspar of Oakdale and Garland and Stan Phepps of Wellsville, Utah; nine grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

A remembrance of Mrs. Schoenfelder's life will be at 1 p.m. tomorrow at the Riverbank home of her grandson, Glee Jaspar.

Butterfield

Aug. 23, 1909 — Feb. 7, 2003

Elsie M. Butterfield, 93, a former Tuolumne County resident, died Friday, Feb. 7, in Poway, San Diego County.

Mrs. Butterfield was born in Merced and moved to Oakland with her family in 1926. She had lived in Twain Harte and Columbia a total of 27 years, beginning in 1964. She had lived in Poway for the past two years.

She graduated from Oakland Technical High School in 1928 and was a graduate of Willis College of Business in 1930.

From 1936 to 1939, she served as a secretary to the chief of the annuity and retirement division of the Civil Service Commission in Washington, D.C. In 1939, she transferred to Oakland, where she was secretary to the forecaster in charge of the weather bureau at the Oakland Airport. She worked in the same capacity at the San Francisco Airport from 1941 to 1945, when the center was moved into the city. She continued to work for the meteorologist in charge until 1954.

That year, she married Vern Butterfield and moved to San Diego, where she was active in church and civic activities.

She and her husband moved to Twain Harte in 1964, and Mrs. Butterfield became an avid angler. The couple traveled extensively throughout Utah, Nevada and California on fishing excursions.

In 1973, they moved from Twain Harte to Columbia, where she was an active member of the Mariners Club and the Columbia Presbyterian Church of the '49ers.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vern, in 2001.

Mrs. Butterfield is survived by two sons, Don Butterfield of San Diego and Garry Butterfield of Rancho Bernardo, San Diego County; one daughter, Cheryl Thompson of San Diego; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

No service is planned. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

SNELL — William Snell, age not available, of Sonora died yesterday a Stockton hospital. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
