Leonard Costa

Sept. 4, 1932 — Dec. 27, 2012

Leonard Costa died Dec. 27 at his home in Sonora. He was 80.

Mr. Costa was born in Saugus, Mass. His family moved to the Central Valley when he was a toddler.

He owned a dairy farm in the 1960s and enjoyed raising cattle. He later was a truck driver in Modesto for 45 years. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 439 and 386.

Mr. Costa retired to Sonora 15 years ago.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his children, John Costa, of Turlock, Dan Costa, of Oakdale, Laura Harrelson, of Holiday, Utah, Terry Costa, of Coulterville, Mark Costa, of Ventura, and Jeanette Senior, of Ventura; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at a later date.

William Hueston Dagg

March 26, 1929 — Jan. 13, 2013

William Hueston Dagg, of Groveland, died Jan. 13 at home. He was 83.

Mr. Dagg was born in Winslow, Ariz., to Hueston William Dagg and Joan Dagg.

He moved to California with his mother and graduated from University of California, Los Angeles, with a bachelor of arts degree.

Mr. Dagg was a mechanical and industrial engineer in the Bay Area for 50 years, working for various companies, including Lockheed and U.S. Steel.

He married Lillian Grimstad in 1953. 

While working, Mr. Dagg also designed and built a home in Groveland — where he had visited — and moved there 30 years ago.

Mr. Dagg enjoyed art, nature, history, travel and animals.

He is survived by two sons, Alan Dagg, of Groveland, and Daniel Dagg, of Clayton; two daughters, Kathleen Parker, of Concord, and Karin Shepanek, of Danville; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and his former wife, Lillian Grimstad, of Danville.  

A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Feb. 10 at the Pine Mountain Lake Country Club Grill at 12765 Mueller Drive, Groveland.

Robert Famiglio

April 17, 1927 — Dec. 14, 2012

Robert Famiglio, of Sonora, died Dec. 14 at Avalon Care Center in Sonora. He was 85.

Mr. Famiglio was born in New Orleans.

He was a warehouse manager for 31 years and lived in Sonora for the past two years.

He is survived by a friend, Gary Benevento, of Murphys.

No services are planned.

Howard Fox

Feb. 17, 1918 — Jan. 15, 2013

Howard Fox, of Tuolumne, died Jan. 15 at his home. He was 94.

Mr. Fox was born in Philadelphia, Pa., to Maude Thompson and Howard Kip Fox.

He was brought to California by his father as a young boy.

Mr. Fox moved in and out of Tuolumne County at various times throughout his life. He settled in the area five years ago due to his health. He lived with his daughter, Donna, for the past three years.

He worked for the federal government as a radio installer for 15 years until retirement.

He was a member of Chapel in the Pines in Twain Harte, and enjoyed radio, aviation and photography.

Mr. Fox was preceded in death by his oldest daughter, Janice Fox.

He is survived by his wife, Lois Fox, of Tuolumne; four daughters, Linda Robinson, of Sacramento, Marylin Lessard, of Reno, Nev., Joycelyn Crisman, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Donna Benning, of Tuolumne; 12 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Feb. 16 at the Journey Church, 14425 Mono Way, East Sonora.

Phillip Melendrez

Aug. 13, 1937 — Jan. 17, 2013

Phillip Melendrez, of Sonora, died Jan. 17 at Avalon Care Center in Sonora. He was 75.

Mr. Melendrez was born in Pasadena to Edward and Lucy Melendrez.

Mr. Melendrez was a dock worker for cargo transport for 12 years and had served in the U.S. Coast Guard.

He enjoyed movies, music and reading the Bible.

Mr. Melendrez is survived by his sons, Robert Melendrez, of Kalispell, Mont., and Ronald Melendrez, of Copperopolis; daughters Elaina Melendrez, of Jamestown, Angela Cunningham, of Turlock, and Christina Melendrez; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

TIRAPELLI — John Tirapelli, 61, of Mokelumne Hill, died Jan. 26 at his home. A service was planned for 11 a.m. Monday at Sutter Creek Catholic Cemetery, City Cemetery Road. San Andreas Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements. 

VALENCIA — Wanda Valencia, 67, of Mokelumne Hill, died Jan. 25 at her home. A service was planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at San Andreas Community Covenant Church, 261 Treat Avenue. San Andreas Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
