Harry Charles Hemstalk

June 18, 1923 — Feb. 4, 2004

Longtime Tuolumne County resident Harry Charles Hemstalk died Wednesday at a Soulsbyville care home. He was 80.

He was born in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. He had lived in Tuolumne County since 1971, most recently in Sonora. He worked as a self-employed masonry contractor for 46 years. He was a lifetime member of the United Brick Layers Union and a member of the Phoenix Lake Men's Golf Club, Sons in Retirement (SIRS) and Sonora Elks Lodge No. 1587. He was a past member of the Walnut Creek Elks Lodge. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1943-46.

Mr. Hemstalk is survived by his sons, Bob and Kip Hemstalk, both of Sonora; two grandchildren, Janelle Franco of Discovery Bay and Mason Hemstalk of Sonora; a great-grandson, Clayton Franco of Discovery Bay; and a sister, Ruth McPherson of Bethel Island, Contra Costa County.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Hemstalk; brothers, Arthur and Cedric; and sisters, Vera, Mabel, Marie and Dorothy.

Visitation is scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon tomorrow at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home. A chapel service will be at noon tomorrow at the funeral home. Burial will be at Mountain Shadow Cemetery, followed by a gathering at the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Posse Grounds, 19130 Rawhide road.

In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of the Sierra, 20100 N. Cedar Road, Sonora.

Leisa Danielle Kelly

Feb. 28, 1957 — Jan. 31, 2004

Leisa Danielle Kelly of San Andreas died unexpectedly Jan. 31 at her home. She was 46.

She was born in Alexandria, La. She grew up in Downey and moved to Pleasanton in 1975, then to San Andreas in 1985.

She was a homemaker.

She is survived by her brother, David Kelly of Alameda; an aunt and uncle, Joanne and Edward Sites of Dublin; cousins, Nancy Moyers of Pleasanton and Carol Lewis of Livermore; and her mother, Candy Kelly of Los Gatos.

Her son, Ryan, died on the same day.

A private service will be held at a later date.

Ryan Joseph Kelly

June 9, 1986 — Jan. 31, 2004

Lifelong San Andreas resident Ryan Joseph Kelly died unexpectedly Jan. 31 at his home. He was 17.

He was born in San Andreas and lived there all his life. He attended Calaveras High School in San Andreas.

Mr. Kelly is survived by his grandmother, Candy Kelly of Los Gatos; an uncle, David Kelly of Alameda; a great aunt and great uncle, Joanne and Edward Sites of Dublin; and a cousin, Nathan Kelly of Alameda.

His mother, Leisa, died on the same day.

A private service will be held at a later date.

Daniel Frederick Ortner

May 5, 1946 — Feb. 1, 2004

Daniel Frederick Ortner of Burson died Feb. 1 at his home after a long illness. He was 57.

He was born in Niagara Falls, N.Y., and grew up in Lewiston, N.Y. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1966-69 and was wounded in action. He received the Purple Heart.

After being discharged from the Marines, he attended St. John's University, where he earned his bachelor's degree. He later earned his juris doctorate from the University of Georgia. He moved to California in 1975 and settled in Burson in 1985.

He was a member of the American Legion.

Mr. Ortner is survived by two daughters, Angela Ortner of Davis and Danielle Ortner of Valley Springs; four brothers, John Ortner of Los Angeles, Thomas Ortner of Savannah, Ga., Larry Ortner of Philadelphia and Steven Ortner of Lewiston, N.Y.; a sister, Sara Dugann of Eugene, Ore.; and his mother, Sara Ortner of Lewiston, N.Y.

Services were held.

Charles ‘Charley' Ivan Baldwin

June 1, 1922 — Feb. 5, 2004

Longtime Angels Camp resident Charles "Charley" Ivan Baldwin died Thursday at a Jackson hospital. He was 81.

He was born in Fairfield, Idaho, and had lived in Angels Camp for 43 years. He was owner and operator of Baldwin & Son Excavating Co., in Angels Camp. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

His family said he was an avid treasure hunter and traveler.

Mr. Baldwin is survived by his wife, Lois E. Baldwin of Angels Camp; four sons, Ron Baldwin of Angels Camp, Chuck Thomas of Tuolumne, and Danny and Mark Miles, both of Murphys; a daughter, Anne Anderson of Murphys; a sister, Neola Liberty of Lincoln City, Ore.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

Donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Aid Society, 105 S. Washington St., Lodi, CA 95240.

MADRID — John Madrid, 57, died yesterday at his Jamestown residence. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

LANE — Mary Robin Lane, 93, of Sonora died yesterday at a Sonora care center. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
