July 4, 1910 — Nov. 27, 2003

Joe Boan of Sonora died Nov. 27 in Tuolumne. He was 93.

He was born on a farm near Eldon, Mo., and played guitar and sang well, his family said, by the time he was a teenager. He was playing professionally with dance bands in Kansas City, one of the big jazz centers of that era, and with his voice and looks became a local celebrity, his family said.

By 1930, he played and toured with Red Nichols and his Five Pennies band and worked with singer Dorothy Lamour and played with Stan Kenton, Tommy Dorsey, Fats Waller and many of the big names of jazz, his family said. They added that he became friends with Count Basie and the Andrew Sisters and later had his own radio show.

He headed for Hollywood in 1938, where he continued playing, singing and writing songs. His family said he wrote more than 100 songs before he lost his hearing as a young man.

He became a machinist in the defense industry when World War II began, and later worked for the AiResearch Corp. for 31 years, building equipment for the Apollo spacecraft that went to the moon and back. He also was a skilled photographer, his family said.

He retired to Columbia in 1985. On his 90th birthday in 2000, he was grand marshal of the Fourth of July parade in Columbia.

Mr. Boan is survived by his godson, Joe Slagle of Glendora; a nephew, Gordon Corpus of Santa Cruz; and friends, Connie and Andy Mical of Twain Harte, Ann Slagle, Nancy James, Sandi Breeden, Don Montoya and many friends in the Columbia area.

A celebration of life is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday at the Jack Douglass Saloon in Columbia.
