Venora ‘Jewell’ Myers
Dec. 2, 1920 — Nov. 29, 2011
Former Sonora resident Venora “Jewell” Myers died Nov. 29 at a senior living facility in Modesto. She was 90.
Born in Scipio, Okla., to Doc and Louisa Jo Martin, she graduated valedictorian from Indianola High School in 1938 and married her high school sweetheart, Orion T. Myers, a few months later. The couple was married for 70 years and had three sons.
The couple moved to Manteca in the 1950s, where her husband worked as a mechanic for Standard Oil, and she was a chemist for Spreckles Sugar.
After the couple retired in 1969, they moved to Sonora where they owned and operated Myers’ Liquors. They later sold the store in the 1980s, but she continued to work at the store into her 70s because she enjoyed it.
She enjoyed having people over to her ranch and making homemade bread and vegetables from her husband’s garden.
Mrs. Myers is survived by her sons and their wives, Steven and Roseanna Myers, of Modesto, and Martin and Joyce Myers, of Tracy; grandchildren and their spouses, Lisa and Mike Lawrence, of Balico, Julie and Jeff Beebe, of Escalon, Chuck and Angie Myers, of Salida, Robin McStay, of Yreka, James and Jamie Myers, of Los Angeles, Joyanna Myers, of Modesto, and Lori and Brian Nelson, and Marty and Stacy Myers, all of Ripon; and 14 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband and 70 years, Orion T. Myers; and son and daughter-in-law, Gerald and Claudia Myers.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the P.L. Fry and Son Funeral Home, 290 North Union Road, Manteca.
